Potsdam, NY – A solid run to start the second half from the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team was thwarted by Skidmore, as the Golden Knights fell 60-44 in Liberty League play Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 4-4 on the season and 0-2 in Liberty League play, while Skidmore moved to 3-3 and 1-0. Clarkson takes on Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.
Skidmore had two early 3-pointers from Cassie Davidson and Sarah Chambers to take an early lead, but Cassidy Dumont kept the Golden Knights close through most of the first quarter, scoring nine of her 14 first-half points in the opening 10 minutes. A last second 3-pointer from Sophia Martinez gave the Thoroughbreds a seven-point lead at the first break. The margin remained right around that seven-point mark for the first five minutes of the second quarter, but Skidmore went on a late run that put the Knights down by as many as 16 with a little under three minutes to go. A layup in the final ticks of the half from Bella Doyle put the Knights down by 14 heading into the locker room.
Clarkson had an edge in rebounds in the first half (20-15), but the Thoroughbreds got extra chances thanks to nine offensive rebounds while also forcing the Golden Knights to commit 15 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
In the first handful of minutes in the second half, Clarkson trimmed the lead in half with a 7-0 run thanks to five quick points from Fallon Griffin and a jumper by Raelin Burns. The lead edged back out to 10 for the Thoroughbreds near the midway point of the quarter, and Skidmore followed with a solid stretch thanks to Madison Meyer, who scored eight points in a stretch of barely three minutes. Both teams scored plenty in the third quarter, but each team was fairly quiet in the fourth with Skidmore barely edging the Knights 6-4 over the final 10 minutes.
Cassidy Dumont led all scorers with 16 points, going 6-for-10 from the field. Raelin Burns added nine and Fallon Griffin scored eight for the Knights. Bella Doyle found teammates for five assists.
For Skidmore, Madison Meyer came off the bench to score 14 points in only 17 minutes, shooting 5-for-8 from the floor. Sarah Chambers also tossed in 11 points by going 4-for-7 from the field with three 3-pointers.
