ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball had five in double figures with one close to a triple-double and another one rebound away from a double-double as the Blue Jays beat Juniata at Thompson Gymnasium Wednesday night 86-64 to improve to 3-0 in the Landmark. Jess King had a team-high 20 points while Allyia Kennedy netted a career-high 18 points for Etown.
Makenna Mummert had the first two baskets of the game as she was one of the five in double digits for Elizabethtown with 10. Juniata was able to stay close with the Jays through the first quarter, only trailing by six, 21-15.
Every time Etown attempted to pull away, the Eagles latched on and hung around, in large part to Steph Emert's 13 first-half points. EC could get the lead near double figures, but Juniata would come back. Cyleigh Wilson's three with a minute to go in the second quarter gave Elizabethtown its largest lead of the first half, at the time, at 11. Wilson sank her second trey in less than a minute's time with 24 ticks to go to get the advantage up to 12, but Haily Sherman was able to sneak in a layup with three seconds left and the Eagles went into the break down 10, 43-33.
King and DaniRae Renno each had 10 points in the first half as the Blue Jays looked to utilize their size advantage in the post. Kennedy recorded seven first-half points off the bench and Lindsay Boyd knocked down a pair of threes as well.
Renno's layup on Etown's first third-quarter possession kept the lead at 10, but Juniata fought and got back to within five with 7:17 to go in the third. From there, the Jays went on a 16-4 run to close out the third quarter and take a 17-point lead into the fourth. King connected on four of EC's final five baskets of the third, the other being Kennedy's. Kennedy provided assists on two of King's buckets in the paint and she finished with a career-high eight assists in the game to go along with her seven rebounds (ties career-high) and end the night with 18, 7, and 8.
Wilson, Grace O'Connor, Kennedy, and Boyd each had layups to begin the fourth as Elizabethtown continued its dominance in the painted area. They finished the game plus-24 in the paint. Their first six makes of the fourth were layups until Wilson drained her third three of the game with less than half the quarter to play.
The Blue Jays pulled away over the final quarter and a half to stay unbeaten in the conference. Renno finished the night with 12 and Wilson 11.
Elizabethtown will play at Susquehanna on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m.
