Fast Start Propels WLC To Victory In NACC Lid-Lifter

AURORA, Ill. (WLCSports.com) - Four players scored in double figures and Wisconsin Lutheran College shot a season-high 48 percent from the floor en route to a 71-56 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference-opening win over Aurora on Wednesday at Thornton Gymnasium.

The Warriors (3-3, 1-0 NACC), who extended their winning streak to 15 straight games over the Spartans, led by as many as 21 points on their way to the wire-to-wire victory.

Senior Mack Hogenson (Neenah, Wis.) scored the first six points of the game for WLC, which jumped out to an 8-0 lead four minutes in. Wisconsin Lutheran built its first double-digit advantage at 12-2 following a layup from freshman Abby Cole (Fond du Lac, Wis.). The Warriors, who shot 56.3 percent from the floor in the first quarter, closed on a 10-1 scoring run to take a 22-5 lead into the second quarter. 

Back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Lily Oiler (Watertown, Wis.) and senior Kara Troxel (Bonduel, Wis.) gave WLC a game-high 21-point lead less than two minutes in. AU whittled its deficit down to just eight points with two-and-a-half minutes left before halftime, before five straight from Wisconsin Lutheran extended the lead back to 13 points at 37-24. The Warriors went into the break holding a 37-28 advantage.

WLC opened the third quarter with eight straight points, including a pair of triples from Hogenson that increased the lead to 17 points. Aurora battled back to bring its deficit down to just eight points at 47-39 with 3:27 left in the period. However, a three-pointer from Troxel on Wisconsin Lutheran's next possession vaulted the lead back to double digits, where it stayed through the remainder of the quarter as the Warriors led 59-44 after three.

In an evenly matched fourth quarter where neither team went on a scoring run of more than three points, WLC maintained its double-digit lead for the entire final frame. Sophomore Margie Stevens (Oneida, Wis.) netted all 12 of Wisconsin Lutheran's fourth quarter points, as it led by 15 points on four separate occasions.

Stevens paced four players in double figures with a game-high 16 points. Troxel finished with 13 points, while Hogenson added 12. Cole chipped in 10 points and tied for a game-high nine rebounds off the bench. Junior Jayden Hill (Kenosha, Wis.) added seven rebounds, five points, and three steals. WLC shot a season-best 48 percent (24-for-50) from the floor, including a season-best 47.8 percent with 11 makes from beyond the arc.

Riley Doggett scored 11 points for the Spartans (5-2, 0-1 NACC), who shot 31.3 percent (20-for-64) from the floor.
