Third Quarter Run Earns Catholic Victory over Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa.  — The Catholic women's basketball team returned from Thanksgiving break with a Landmark matchup against Susquehanna on Wednesday night. After a tightly played first half, the Cardinals took the game over with a 25-0 run in the third quarter to cruise to a 66-52 win to move to 5-1 (2-1) on the season.

Despite having an advantage in field goal percentage in the opening quarter, the River Hawks committed 10 turnovers and Catholic led 15-14 at the end of the quarter. Anna Scoblick led the defensive effort for the Cardinals with four steals in the quarter.

The game remained tightly played in the second quarter with the Cards taking their slim one point lead into the halftime break at 26-25. Kerry Flaherty opened up the scoring with a jumper and Carly Mulvaney led the way with five points in the quarter for the Catholic offense. Lauren Kraft and Amelia Kennedy also scored in the quarter for the Cardinals to hold the advantage.

The Cardinals took control of the game with a dominant third-quarter effort, highlighted by a 25-0 run, to take a commanding 55-32 lead in the final quarter. The game was deadlocked at 30 when the run started on a Scoblick layup, then Catholic held Susquehanna to 0-for-9 from the field and caused six turnovers. In total, eight different Cardinal players scored during the run with Mulvaney leading the way with seven points. As a team, the Cardinals shot 12-for-19 (63%) in the quarter while holding the River Hawks to just 3-for-14 in the quarter.

Despite outscoring Catholic 20-11 in the fourth, Susquehanna was unable to rebound from the run in the third quarter and the Cardinals came away with a 66-52 win for its second conference win of the season, both coming on the road. The win marked the 12th straight win over the River Hawks for the Cardinals and 15 of the last 16 have gone to Catholic. Four of the five victories for Catholic have come by double-digits so far this season. 

Catholic was led in points by Mulvaney who finished with 14 while also pulling down eight rebounds to also lead the team in that category. Scoblick was behind her with 12 points, also coming up with a career-high seven steals. Kennedy also tallied a career-high in steals with six while providing nine points off the bench for the Cardinals. As a team, Catholic reached 20+ steals for the second time this season and forced 29 Susquehanna turnovers. 

The Cardinals return to Franny Murray Court on Saturday, December 7 for yet another Landmark conference game against Moravian. Tip off against the Greyhounds is for 2 pm on Saturday.
