PITTSBURGH, Pa. (December 4) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team led early at Chatham but fell 71-54 after a second half rally by the Cougars.
Waynesburg falls to 4-4 on the season and 0-4 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Chatham rises to 4-3, 2-2 PAC.
Waynesburg led for over 10 minutes of game time in the first and second quarters before a 25-9 third quarter for Chatham turned a three-point game at the half into a double-digit win for the hosts.
Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W. Va. / Morgantown) drained three three-pointers in the opening quarter, the last of which gave the Jackets a 15-11 edge. Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) grew Waynesburg's lead to six (17-11) before Chatham scored in the final basket of the period as the Jackets led by four (17-13) heading into the second.
The Cougars took a 23-21 lead midway through the second quarter after a 10-2 spurt. Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) tied the game with a pair of foul shots. The Cougars scored the next basket and led the rest of the quarter and carried a 31-28 edge into halftime.
Waynesburg turned the ball over 11 times in the third quarter, leading to 24 of Chatham's 25 points in the frame. The Cougars lead swelled from three to 21 points (56-35) by the final minute of the quarter. Chatham led by double-digits the rest of the way to secure their second conference win of the season.
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) led the way for the Jackets with 15 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. She was six-for-eight from the field and set a season-high in points. Henkins had 13 points and seven rebounds. Wsolowski finished with eight points and four rebounds.
Both teams grabbed 42 rebounds on the night. However, Chatham won the turnover battle 24-12 and held a 27-10 in points off turnovers.
The Jackets host Allegheny on Saturday at 1 p.m.
