Fifth-year point guard Elizabeth Homan buried 3-pointers to cap a pair of runs to help 17th/20th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan to a non-conference win over Ohio Northern on Tuesday in Ada.
The Bishops got off to fast starts in both of last week's outings, putting up at least 30 points during the first quarter of wins over Muskingum and Heidelberg. Ohio Wesleyan looked to get off to a similar start against the Polar Bears, with sophomore post Macy Miller contributing 3 baskets during a game-opening 8-1 run, but Ohio Northern assembled a 7-0 burst that included back-to-back buckets from Abi Akamine to even the game at 10 with 1:59 left in the first period.
Homan knocked down a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 Ohio Wesleyan run that opened up a double-digit lead midway through the second quarter, but the Polar Bears once again rallied, getting 3-pointers from Akamine, Noelle Ruane, and Abby Dickson to pull within 25-23 less than 3 minutes later, and the first half would end with Ohio Wesleyan leading by a count of 34-28.
Consecutive hoops by senior post Karlee Ross and another Homan 3-pointer helped the Bishops extend the lead to 48-34 midway through the third period, but a Kristen Luersman 3-pointer helped Ohio Northern keep within striking distance at 48-39.
The Polar Bears were still within 9 points when Chloee Glenn scored to make it 57-48 with 2:44 remaining, but fifth-year guard Kasey Schipfer scored the Bishops' next 5 points, sinking a lay-in and going 3-for-4 from the line, to stretch the margin to 62-48 with :39 to go.
Schipfer led the Bishops with 22 points. Miller finished with 15 points, and Ross added 12 points and a team-high 9 boards. Homan distributed 10 assists.
