EUREKA, Ill. — Starting the game with a 17-2 run, the Knox College women's basketball team made sure the outcome was never in doubt as the Prairie Fire evened their record at 2-2 on the season with a 101-70 victory over host Eureka College (1-1) at Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena on Tuesday evening. Fifth-year Sarina Dacio poured in a career-high 32 points while first-year Nayeli Nidez Acuña added 21 as the duo accounted for more than half of Knox's scoring output.
Dacio, who had struggled with her shot from the perimeter in the first three games, was on target tonight as she knocked down 5-of-9 from 3-pointers and 12-of-19 overall from the floor. The San Diego native also grabbed seven rebounds to match a career personal best as well.
As good as the Prairie Fire offense was, the defense was just as stout, particularly in the first half when the Red Devils were held to 27 points and 12-of-42 (.286) from the floor.
After that hot start, Knox enjoyed a 29-12 advantage by the end of the opening quarter. The Prairie Fire matched their point total in the second quarter and took a 58-27 lead into the locker room. Although Eureka put up a fight in the third quarter, the Knox lead never fell below 23 the remainder of the game as the Fire cruised to the win.
- Joining Dacio and Nidez Acuña in double figures were fifth-year Haylee Carpenter (4-of-11 behind the arc) and sophomore Bria Medina (7-of-12 field goals) with 15 points apiece, and junior Kylee Callahan with 11.
- Senior Brianna Arizmendi hauled in a team-high 11 of Knox's 61 rebounds on the evening, plus led the squad by dishing out six assists and snagging three steals.
- The Prairie Fire hit 46.2 percent (36-of-78) of their field goals, 37.5 percent (9-of-24) of their 3-point attempts and 69.0 percent (20-of-29) at the foul line.
- Knox last reached triple digits just over a year ago in a 114-105, triple-overtime win over Westminster College. The last foray over the century mark in a regulation game was almost nine years ago in a 123-92 road win at Rockford University.
- Maxine Najera led Eureka with 16 points on 8-of-16 shooting and eight rebounds.
Knox returns home to Memorial Gymnasium for its next game, hosting Millikin University (1-2) on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 5:30 p.m. Live video and stats will available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College athletics.
