Bison Offense Delivers In 105-68 Win Over Colby-Sawyer

DUDLEY, Mass. (11/25/24) – In a battle of two undefeated teams, the Nichols College women's basketball program rolled to a dominant 105-68 victory over Colby-Sawyer College in non-conference play at the Nichols Athletic Center Monday evening.

With the win, the Bison continue their hot start to the season, improving to 4-0 overall. With the loss, the Chargers drop to 6-1 respectively.

CNE Player of the Week Abrianna Vazquez was once again the leader on the floor for Nichols, notching 29 points with three steals, three rebounds and two assists. Junior Alyvia Smith was also in the mix with a 19-point performance, while freshman Juliana Brimecombe continued to set her bar higher with a season-high 12 points, as well as a game-high five steals. Monday marked Nichols' best shooting performance as a team so far this season, with the Bison going 42-of-95 (44.2%) from the field and 12-of-34 (35.3%) from three range.

Nichols shot an impressive 63.6 percent from the field in the opening quarter. With a five-point lead in hand, the Bison would close the half on a 9-0 run to go up 35-21, highlighted by baskets from four different scorers. The scoring onslaught continued into the second frame, with sophomore Adison Whitty knocking down a three at 8:43, spearheading another 12-2 run by the Bison to extend their lead to 47-23. Then, with just under three minutes to play in the half, Vazquez cashed in for a combined eight points on four possessions, moments before freshman Meili Gerety finished out the half with an and-one layup, her first collegiate basket, to give Nichols a 32-point lead at the break.

Colby-Sawyer came out of halftime with more energy, and even put the Bison on notice with an 8-0 run with under five minutes to go in the quarter. However, the Bison continued to deny the Chargers any chance at a true comeback, as they went on to close out the period with six of the final eight points scored, which in turn increased their lead to 35 points at 90-55. As play rolled into the final quarter, Nichols continued to further themselves as Brimecombe and Gerety scored layups less than 10 seconds apart, putting Nichols ahead by 37 points at 99-62 with under five minutes to go. The Bison would go on to win the game by the same difference. All 15 Bison who dressed saw playing time in the win, with 14-of-15 players scoring in some fashion.

Nichols will pause for the Thanksgiving break before hitting the road for two matchups, beginning with a stop at Western New England University (5-0) for their Conference of New England opener on Monday, December 2nd. Coverage begins at 5:30 PM from the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
