CWRU Leads Wire-to-Wire in 90-46 Win at Pitt.-Greensburg

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team led from start to finish on Saturday afternoon in a 90-46 win over the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

The win ended a two-game losing streak for the Spartans who improved to 2-3 overall. The Bobcats fell to 0-4 with the loss.

It was by far the best performance of the season for the Spartans who both registered a season-high in points and allowed the fewest points in a game this season. CWRU also shot season-best percentages overall (50.7%) and from three-point range (35.3%), while recording season-best totals in assists (21) and steals (12).

Five CWRU players finished the game with at least 10 points, led by junior guard Maya Roberts who finished with 14 points, shooting six-of-nine overall and one-of-three from long range while adding four rebounds. Sophomore guard Mya Hartjes added 10 points and matched her career-high with seven assists. Sophomore forward Maura Schorr added 10 points and eight rebounds, junior guard/forward Emily Plachta finished with 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, and four steals, and senior guard Nyah Moore contributed 10 points.

The Spartans came out of the gates with one of their best shooting performances of the season, making 10-of-18 shots overall to grab a 27-14 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. Plachta hit a three on the first possession of the game to give the Spartans an early lead and five different Spartans made at least one three-point shot as the team shot five-of-12 from long range during the first period. Hartjes, Roberts, and Moore each scored seven points during the frame and a pair of free throws by Hartjes with two seconds left in the stanza gave CWRU a 13-point lead going into the second period.

The Spartans held the Bobcats to just one made shot on nine attempts in the second quarter and just five points overall, as CWRU expanded its lead during the frame. The Spartans opened the frame on an 8-0 run and took a 35-14 lead on a layup by Schorr with 4:57 to play in the half. A 14-2 run over the final 3:24 of the period, capped off by sophomore guard Jordyn Call's third three of the half, gave CWRU a 30-point lead, 49-19, heading into halftime.

CWRU went on to score the first 12 points of the third period, taking a 61-19 lead on a layup by Roberts with 6:25 on the clock. The Spartans' lead grew to as many as 45 points during the period and the team closed out the period with a 72-32 lead. CWRU led by as many as 46 points in the fourth quarter en route to the 44-point win.

The Spartans will be back in action on Tuesday when the team travels to Alliance, Ohio to face the University of Mount Union at 7:00 p.m.

Spartan Notes

  • CWRU's 27-point opening quarter was its highest-scoring quarter of the season. It was the most points scored by the Spartans in a quarter since the team scored 30 in the first period against Rochester on February 18, 2024.

  • Meanwhile, the five-point second period by the Bobcats was the fewest points allowed by the Spartans in a quarter this season. It was the lowest-scoring quarter against the Spartans since CWRU allowed just four points in the third quarter against Kenyon on December 1, 2023.

  • Saturday's game was the first-ever meeting between CWRU and Pitt.-Greensburg.

  • The Spartans are scheduled to play Pitt.-Greensburg again on Thursday, December 19 when the Bobcats will visit Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

  • Thirteen different Spartan players appeared in Saturday's game, each of whom scored at least one point.

  • CWRU outscored Pitt.-Greensburg 22-3 in the opening two minutes of quarters during the game.
