Yagodinski and Smith combine for 46, St. Olaf moves to 4-1 after win over Minnesota Morris

MORRIS, Minn. – Behind 46 combined points from sophomore Chloee Smith and senior Paige Yagodinski, the St. Olaf College women's basketball team improved to 4-1 with a 73-66 road victory over the University of Minnesota Morris on Saturday afternoon at Jim Gremmels Court.

Yagodinski tied the single-game school record for three-pointers made by going 7-for-11 from behind the arc on her way to a career-high 21 points, while Smith fell just one point shy of her career high with a game-high 25 points for St. Olaf (4-1). The win over Minnesota Morris (0-6) was the Oles' fourth of the season, matching last season's win total through just five games, and gave St. Olaf its first 4-1 start since 2015-16.

Yagodinski's seven made three-pointers matched the record set by Mackenzie Wolter '13, who was 7-for-10 at the College of Saint Benedict on Feb. 26, 2013. The senior is 12-for-20 from three-point range over St. Olaf's last two games. Meanwhile, Smith put together the fourth double-double of her collegiate career with 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting and 10 rebounds.

Senior Sophia Kormann joined Smith with double-doubles with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Bree Wilkerson came off the bench to add 11 points while going a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range. Smith, Yagodinski, Kormann, and Wilkerson combined to score 67 of the Oles' 73 points in the win.

Led by 4-for-4 shooting from Smith, St. Olaf shot 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) from the field in the opening quarter but led by just two at 18-16 after 10 minutes. Minnesota Morris scored seven consecutive points to turn a 13-9 deficit into a 16-13 lead inside the final two minutes of the quarter before Wilkerson scored five quick points to give the Oles the lead back.

Yagodinski hit 3-of-4 three-pointers in the second quarter to help St. Olaf extend its lead to 37-31 at the half after the Oles shot 60.0 percent (15-for-25) in the half. Yagodinski's third three-pointer of the quarter gave St. Olaf its largest lead of the half at 33-25 midway through the quarter, as Smith and Yagodinski combined for 26 of the Oles' 37 first-half points.

The Cougars trimmed the Oles' lead to 39-35 in the first 2:30 of the third quarter, but back-to-back threes by Yagodinski and a put-back by Kormann quickly got St. Olaf's lead back to 10. The Oles led by as many as 11 in the quarter on a three-point play by Smith, who had seven points in the third, and took a nine-point lead into the fourth at 58-49.

Wilkerson's second made three-pointer of the fourth quarter gave St. Olaf a 69-56 lead with 5:21 to go for its largest lead of the game, but the hosts put together an 8-0 run over the span of 1:30 to get within five with over 3:30 to play. Smith ended the run with back-to-back baskets in the final two minutes to help the Oles close out the victory.

St. Olaf returns to Bob Gelle Court on Tuesday, Nov. 26 for a 5 p.m. tip-off against Bethany Lutheran College.
