WILMINGTON, Ohio (Nov. 20) – Led by a game-high 20 points from senior Abigail Westmeyer, the Denison University used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from Wilmington College in a 70-62 victory on the road Wednesday evening.
The victory improves Denison to 4-1 overall. The loss drops Wilmington to 1-3.
Westmeyer converted six field goals and added eight made free throws in the effort. She added six rebounds and three assists against the Quakers.
Sophomore guard Violet Mitchell scored in double figures for the fourth time in five games this season. Mitchell finished with 11 points to join Westmeyer in double figures. Sophomore guard Abby Cooch chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Big Red converted at a 50 percent clip (24 of 48) from the field in the victory. However, Denison struggled with turnovers at times, as they turned it over 21 times Wednesday.
Brooke Toigo had the hot hand early on. The junior accounted for six of the first eight Denison points to spark an early lead. Wilmington countered with 10-straight points to push in front by a 15-8 led at the 4:47 mark. The Big Red answered with seven-consecutive points over the next two minutes. Layups by Toigo and sophomore Adelyn Mooreevened the score at 15 with 2:48 remaining in the opening quarter. Denison took a 19-16 lead into the second quarter after a pair of field goals by senior Bryana Woodard.
The Big Red led by as many as eight points on multiple occasions in the second quarter. A layup by senior Maddie Goodman made the lead 37-29 with 51 seconds left before halftime.
Wilmington battled back in the third and eventually regained the lead. After a three-pointer by Moore stretched the Denison lead to 46-41 midway through the third, the Quakers made another run before tying the score at 49 at the 3:49 mark. Wilmington scored six of the next seven points to move in front and carry a 57-54 into the fourth quarter.
Trailing by three points entering the fourth quarter, Denison outscored Wilmington by a 16-5 margin over the final 10 minutes. The Big Red defense clamped down and limited the Quakers to just 11 percent shooting (2-of-18) from the field in the fourth.
Denison owned the advantage in the paint. The Big Red outpaced the Quakers by a 44-28 margin in points in the paint.
