Women's basketball caught in Eagles' nest

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Women's basketball fell 60-48 to Bridgewater College in Friday night's game.

Inside the Box Score

Chanelle Lee (Brunswick, Md./Saint John's Catholic Prep) scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Kourtney Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch High School) grabbed 11 rebounds, scored six points, and led her team with three steals

Na'Vaye Quarles (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) and Libby Kiley (Taneytown, Md./Springdale Prep) each scored nine points. Kiley shot 60% from beyond the arc.

How it Happened

Hood took six shots within the first two minutes to start the game aggressively on the offensive end; however, they were not able to get any to fall. Instead, the Eagles established their lead early, following a pair of 3-pointers and a layup. Lee responded with back-to-back baskets of her own and Kiley sunk her first three-pointer of the night. Bridgewater seemed to have control early. Quarles found Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) who responded with a layup, but the Eagles held a 17-9 lead after the first ten minutes.

The Blazers offense was limited in the second quarter. Johnson and Quarles put points on the board for Hood, along with Lee at the free throw line. As a team, turnovers became costly and the Eagles turned them into points on the other end. Bridgewater built on their lead and went into halftime up 31-15.

The second half appeared to be a different story for Hood. The Blazers' offense picked up and they won the third quarter. Quarles scored six right after halftime and Kiley made consecutive shots from deep. With halftime adjustments looking to be successful, Hood was able to cut the deficit down to 12 heading into the final frame.

Hood built on a strong third quarter and kept things going in the fourth. The majority of Lee's 20 points came in the final ten minutes, highlighted by a couple of 3-pointers and fast break points. Johnson continued to contribute and first year guard Maya Gordon (Towson, Md./Loch Raven High School) scored her first career points. The second half was completely different for Hood; they nearly shot 50% from the field. In the end, the first half deficit was too much to overcome, and Bridgewater won 60-48.
