Canton, NY – Senior Cassidy Dumont eclipsed the 1000-point mark for her career with a 14-footer in the opening quarter of Saturday's game, but the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team dropped a 58-44 decision to St. Lawrence University at Burkman Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights fell to 0-2 on the season and will look to regroup with a non-league game at Paul Smith's College on Monday evening. St. Lawrence improved to 3-0 on the year.
Although Clarkson scored the first point of the contest on a free throw, the Saints had an early 12-0 run thanks to 3-pointesr from Elizabeth Flynn and Annie Perry. Clarkson cut into the margin and got back to within 10 at the end of the first quarter when Cassidy Dumont hit a runner in the lane.
In the second quarter, Clarkson was back to within single digits following an Elizabeth Aiossa make in the paint at 5:42, only to see the Saints again get hot from the perimeter. Caelan McHarney and Jackie Malley made 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to push the gap back to 16 points. A fastbreak layup in the final minute by Elizabeth Flynn put the margin at 19 at the break.
Clarkson had different difficulties in the two first-half quarters, as the team was outrebounded 12-3 in the first 10 minutes. After the Knights shored up that deficiency in the second quarter, the squad struggled with turnovers, committing five miscues, a few leading to easy points at the other end. St. Lawrence was strong from the perimeter throughout the half, going 6-for-13 from beyond the arc.
Neither team mustered much in the way of offense, so the brief runs by both teams did not alter the margin by much. Clarkson had five straight to get within 16 (41-25) and St. Lawrence responded with six points during a 4:38 scoreless stretch by the Knights to return the gap to 22.
Clarkson opened the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run thanks to 3-pointers from Burns and Doyle, with a second 3-pointer from Burns at 7:12 getting the Knights within 10 (48-38). The Saints finally broke their offensive silence on a layup by Flynn at 6:56. That basket ended Clarkson's run as the team mustered six points over the last seven minutes.
Bella Doyle finished with 16 points and six rebounds as the lone player in double figures for the Knights. Burns added eight and Dumont scored seven. For St. Lawrence, Elizabeth Flynn had 12 points and seven boards and Caelan McHarney ended with 11 points.
