Vikings Complete Comeback with Second Half Surge Against LaGrange

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Berry Women's Basketball clashed in a neutral-site competition against LaGrange College where both teams battled until the end with a 63-57 win for Berry.

Karlee Armstrong led the way with hot shooting from the free-throw line as she went 11/13 and had 13 total points to pace the Vikings.

Elly Callihan paced the Vikings in the first quarter as she scored 6 of their twelve points. A hot start by the Panthers would keep the Vikings behind though, 15-12.

Senior guard Kenadie Lee knocked down a mid-range jump shot off of an inbound pass from Emma Hempker that cut the LaGrange lead back down to 3. After the Vikings fell behind 8 points, senior point guard Jayda Wood found space and knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key off of a Kenadie Lee assist to cut the lead to 5 with 6:48 to play.

As the half winded down, the two teams traded baskets until Sylvia Kahoro drove to the basket and kicked the ball out to Jeryn Jarrett in the corner who laced a three-pointer to draw within 1, 25-24. Following that exchange, the two teams traded baskets in the final stretch of the first half, and the Vikings entered the half down by 2, 30-28.

In the third quarter, it was a total team effort displayed by the Vikings that powered them to a 2 point lead, 41-39, with 4 minutes left in the third. With 2 and a half minutes left, the crowd erupted as senior center Brooke Jones battled for an offensive rebound and laid it into the basket to give the Vikings a 44-41 lead.

As the half winded down, the Vikings did not let up. Senior Karlee Armstrong took the ball coast-to-coast and then dished the ball to a trailing Callie Jackson who drained a midrange shot and extended the lead to 7, Berry's largest lead of the game up to that point.

The Vikings controlled the fourth quarter with patience and calculated possessions that kept LaGrange behind. Karlee Armstrong put the game on ice with a floater that pushed the lead to 11 with just 2:36 to play in the fourth quarter. LaGrange did not give up though, cutting the Berry lead to as low as four, but solid free-throw shooting down the stretch preserved the win for Berry, 63-57.

Joining Armstrong's 13 points were contributions from seniors Elly CallihanKenadie Lee, and Sylvia Kahoro, who all netted 8 points to power the Viking offense. Jayda Wood also added 7 points.

Berry's next contest will be tomorrow at 1 PM ET as they take on Piedmont in their second and final game of the CCS/SAA Classic.
