Redlands Women's Basketball opens season with win thanks to a dominant defensive performance

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's basketball team (1-0) opened their 2024-25 season with a 60-45 win against St. Catherine University Friday night.

The opening basket of the season came from AJ Wick as Leila Hosn got the assist. Following baskets from Colbi Zorich, Aliyah Anderson, and Wick the Bulldogs led by eight, 10-2.

Kayden Sanders ended the quarter by making a three with only four seconds on the clock as it was 15-5 Redlands.

Sanders opened the second the way she finished the first, making a three. With 2:01 left in the half Alex Facelo was assisted by Hosn on a three to extend the lead to their largest of the game at 20, 31-11.

Leading by 18 at the half Redlands scored the first 11 points of the third quarter. Andrea Perkins capped the run with a three as they held the Wildcats scoreless for nearly six minutes and led by 30, 43-13.

With the game in hand the Bulldogs pulled some starters which allowed St. Catherine to get within 15, 49-34, with 5:55 left in the fourth.

Facelo, Zorich, and Wick responded with layups over the next 2:30 as the lead grew to 19 which helped the Bulldogs close out the game.

Hosn did not have a big game offensively, but she had five assists and seven steals, tying her for the 11th most in program history. Wick added 14 points and 15 rebounds while Zorich had a game-high 17 points with nine rebounds.

Redlands hosts No. 17 Transylvania University tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
