Bishops Pull Away to Win Elizabethtown Tournament Title

Sophomore post Macy Miller (Marysville/Milford Center Fairbanks) scored 8 points and fifth-year guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) knocked down a pair of 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with a 14-4 run and went on to a win over Elizabethtown in the championship game of the Yonnie Kauffman Blue Jay Tournament, hosted by Elizabethtown College on Saturday in Elizabethtown, Pa.

The teams were tied at 28 at the half, but Denison opened the second-half scoring with a 3-pointer, and after DaniRae Renno split a pair of free throws for the Blue Jays, it was Miller with a lay-in and Denison with another trifecta for a 36-29 lead.  Miller sank 3 lay-ins to cap the Bishop run, which ended with Ohio Wesleyan holding a 42-32 lead at the midway point of the period.

Makenna Mummert answered with a 3-pointer for Elizabethtown, and the Blue Jays were still within 7 points at the end of the third quarter, but Miller opened the fourth quarter with a pair of lay-ins, and after a Mummert lay-in made it a 56-47 with 8:42 to play, the Bishops held the Blue Jays scoreless for nearly 5 minutes.  Meanwhile, Denison, fifth-year guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg), and Miller contributed lay-ins before a pair of Schipfer free throws stretched the margin to 64-47, and 3-pointers by fifth-year point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) and Denison helped the Bishops close out the win.

Miller led the Bishops with 22 points, while Schipfer finished with 20 points and a game-high 14 boards, and Denison scored 18 points and shared the team lead with 4 assists.  Homan also distributed 4 assists.

Miller was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and was joined on the all-tournament team by Homan.
