Keuka College Women’s Basketball Falls in Opener at SUNY Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost their season-opener at SUNY Morrisville 77-65 on Friday night.

Keuka College (0-1) was led by Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) led the Wolves with 18 points. Teammates Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) and Lillian Mullen (Canisteo, N.Y. / Canisteo-Greenwood) were right behind Brown with 17 points in the loss.

SUNY Morrisville 77 vs. Keuka 65

After missing the opening shots, both teams exchanged threes to open the 2024-25 season. Sydney Brown knocked down one of her three first-quarter triples for the Wolves as she netted the first three baskets for the Green and Gold to tie the game at 9-9. A layup by Morrisville was the first two-pointer of the game with 3:24 left in the first. After an Ellen Lavonas (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) basket, the Mustangs scored the final three points to lead 19-14 after one.

Mary Cotter opened the scoring in the second quarter with a basket two minutes in to cut the lead to three. However, a ten-point run for the Mustangs pushed their lead to double figures. A three by Lillian Mullen ended the run for the hosts. Morrisville had another response for the Wolves with seven unanswered points. Both teams had a late flurry of points in the final minute. Morrisville took a 15-point lead into the halftime break, leading 41-26.

A personal 5-0 run for Mary Cotter early in the second half dropped the margin to 12. A minute later, a three by Sydney Brown made it 45-34 as the Wolves fought to get back into the game. However, Morrisville pushed their lead back out. The Mustangs led by 21 late, but Sydney Brown hit a three to drop the margin to 18. Morrisville took a 62-44 advantage into the final quarter.

Brown's three sparked a small run as baskets by Caiden Crego (Lyons, N.Y. / Lyons) and Mary Cotter opened the fourth for the Wolves. The Mustangs pushed their lead back to 20 midway through the fourth, but the Wolves kept fighting. Nine unanswered for Keuka started with a three by Cotter. Lillian Mullen then followed with a pair of triples to make it 70-59 with three minutes remaining. Another three by Mullen dropped the margin to single digits, but Morrisville answered back to extend their lead on the way to a 77-65 victory.

  • The Wolves have now dropped five straight to the Mustangs. However, Keuka College remains ahead 15-12 in the all-time series
  • Keuka College is 5-5 in their last 10 season openers
  • Sydney Brown's 18 points came off of six threes. She has 150 three-pointers in her career, second most in program history
  • Lillian Mullen went 4-7 from deep in her first collegiate game
  • Brooke Burd (Canisteo, N.Y. / Canisteo-Greenwood) had a game-high 12 rebounds in her first game for the Green and Gold
  • The Wolves won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Morrisville 48-35
  • Caiden Crego tied her career high with seven assists

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves remain on the road next week as they play at Pitt.-Bradford on Wednesday night. Keuka College will then play in a tournament at Keystone College on Friday and Saturday.
