York (Pa.) Opens Home Campaign with 65-46 Win

YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball team opened their 2024-25 campaign with a 64-46 win over Penn State Altoona on Friday night in Charles Wolf Gymnasium in York.
The Spartans put up over 20 points in both the first and third quarters en route to the victory. York had three players reach double figures in the win.
York is now 1-0 overall while the Lions fall to 0-1.
 
How It Happened
• The Lions jumped on the Spartans early as they took a quick 5-2 lead just over a minute into the game. The Spartans responded in impressive fashion as they ripped off a 19-4 run that covered the final 7:36 of the first quarter. The run was kicked off with a Morgan Adams lay-up and was fueled by 10 points from Taylor Burda. Grad forward Alyssa Hocker added five points on the spurt. The Spartans shot 53.5% (8-for-15) from the floor while they were also 3-for-6 from three in the opening quarter.
• The second quarter was an offensive challenge for both teams as the squads combined for just 16 points. The Spartans outscored the Lions 10-6 in the quarter as they took a 31-15 lead to the break.
• The Spartans made some halftime adjustments and came roaring out of the intermission. York began the quarter with a 15-2 run powered by forwards Makenna Zimmerman and Adams as they each had five points on the three-minute run. The Lions responded with eight straight points to cut the Spartan lead to 46-25. The Spartans outscored the Lions 8-4 the remainder of the period to take a 54-29 lead to the final the quarter. Morgan had a big period with eight points while Zimmerman finished with five.
• The Lions outscored the Spartans 17-11 in the fourth quarter as head coach Betsy Witman got some playing time for some of her younger Spartans.

The Spartans shot 46.4% (26-for-56) from the floor including 31.3% (6-for-16) from three … the Lions went 20-for-62 (32.3%) from the field and were 2-for-19 (10.5%) from distance … both teams were bad from the free throw line as York was 8-for-15 (53.3%) from the stripe while Altoona was just 4-for-12 (33.3%) from the line … the Lions won the battle on the boards, 40-38 including a 17-9 bulge in offensive rebounds …. York had an 18-7 edge in assists … both teams struggled to take care of the basketball as York had 17 turnovers while the Lions had 19 … York had 19 points off turnovers while their own miscues cost them 14 points … York had a 22-16 edge in paint points … York held the lead for 94.2% of the game while the lead grew to as many as 29 points (46-17).

The Spartans are now 2-0 all-time against the Lions after winning last year's game by nine points in Altoona … Spartan newcomer Morgan Adams led the way for York with 16 points and nine rebounds as she was 7-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-3 from the free throw line … senior Taylor Burda and grad student Alyssa Hocker each added 13 points … Hocker also pulled in nine rebounds and six assists … Makenna Zimmerman chipped in with seven points, five rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot … sophomore Shealyn Ricks notched a career-high four steals while she also had four rebounds and two points in her 17 minutes of action … Taylor Brenneman had four points, five assists and three steals as she drew the start in place of an injured Breana Grim … the Spartans had six players make their York College debuts as Adams, Gracie GriffithsGrace MasserAlyssa DoughertyAddi Place, and Makenna Seifert played their first games for the Spartans … York had 15 players appear in the game while ten scored.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday night as they host McDaniel in their annual non-conference clash. Tip time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 6:00 pm. The Spartans will look to avenge last season's 69-64 overtime loss in Westminster.
