GAMBIER, Ohio -- Junior Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) solidified her name in Allegheny College women's basketball history on Sunday by surpassing 1,000 career points in the Gators' 64-48 victory at Kenyon College.
Needing only 10 points entering the non-conference matchup with the Owls (2-7), Lauer reached the major milestone early in the second quarter. Her 1,000th and 1,001st points came on a second-chance hook shot as she charged into the paint off the baseline. The bucket put the Gators (4-7) up 24-15, and the coaching staff quickly called a timeout to give the team a chance to celebrate the moment.
Lauer led all scorers with 19 points while shooting an even 50.0% (9-of-18) from the field. She also added a team-leading four steals with four rebounds, three assists, and one block.
The third-year guard, who was named a finalist for the coveted Jostens Trophy last season, is the 18th women's basketball student-athlete to reach 1,000 career points and the most recent since Delaney Arbore '19 did so on this date in 2018. Ironically, Arbore needed only 10 points to reach 1,000 in that matchup on December 10, 2018, at Bethany College.
Allegheny only trailed for a brief moment in the first quarter after a 3-pointer put the Owls ahead 4-3. Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) started a 7-0 run with an and-one on the Gators' next possession. Lauer then buried four unanswered points to push the advantage to 10-4 midway through the quarter, and Allegheny never looked back, thanks in part to a consistent full-court press that often frustrated Kenyon.
