Senior guard Kasey Schipfer had 6 points as Ohio Wesleyan opened the second quater with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good, and the Bishops went on to a win over Emory in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky.

With the win, Ohio Wesleyan advances to the second round to face the winner of Friday night's game between Chatham (Pa.) and Transylvania at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Transylvania.

The win also is Ohio Wesleyan's first in NCAA Division III tournament play since the 2001-02 season, when the Bishops advanced to the sectional semifinals (final 16 teams).

Emory had closed out the first quarter with a 10-0 run that included a 3-pointer by Claire Brock and a 3-point play from Daniella Aronsky, turning a 15-8 deficit into an 18-15 lead during the final 2:25 of the period.

The Eagles answered with a 3-pointer from Brock, and it was still a one-possession game when an Aronsky 3-pointer brought Emory within 27-24 with 3:51 left in the half, but Ohio Wesleyan scored the final 6 points of the half, capped by a 3-pointer from senior guard Lauren Denison that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 33-24 lead at the break.

Jumpers by Griner and Schipfer extended the Bishop lead to 37-24 early in the third quarter, and Ohio Wesleyan led by as many as 14 after a Griner 3-point p;ay shortly thereafter.

Emory rallied to within 43-40 after 3-pointers from Brock and Alexandra Loucopoulos and an Erin Martin lay-in, but Griner knocked down a pair of jumpers and senior point guard Elizabeth Homan beat the third-quarter buzzer with a jumper from the lane for a 49-40 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

The Bishop defense kept the Eagles at arm's length throughout the final quarter, never allowing them to come closer than 6 points the rest of the way.

Schipfer led the Bishops with 26 points, while Griner finished with 13 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.   Freshman post Macy Miller grabbed 11 rebounds, and Homan had a team-high 5 assists.
