MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Berry Women's Basketball clinched second place in the Southern Athletic Association with their Valentine's/Senior Night win over Oglethorpe tonight, 57-53.
Leading scorer, Kenadie Lee started off the night with a made three to take the first lead over the Petrels. Berry held that lead across the next 6 minutes as neither team could get a bucket to go.
Oglethorpe picked up the pace and stole the lead with a pair of free-throws at 7-5 and closed out the first with an 8-3 run to have the 15-10 advantage over the Vikings.
The first three minutes of the second were crucial for the team and Karlee Armstrong tied it at 15 with a made free throw and Sylvia Kahoro took back the Vikings lead and complete a 7-0 run to start the second.
Brooke Jones foul shot gave Berry their largest lead of the first half at 7 (24-17) with almost four minutes remaining before halftime. Some exchanged buckets led to a Lee three, but the Petrels closed out the half with a four to nothing run that cut the Vikings lead to 27-23.
Both teams battled it out in the third and Oglethorpe found the lead once again at 33-31 with a pair of foul shots. The Vikings still held their own and finalized the third with a made triple from Armstrong to be up three heading to the final 10 minutes of play (39-36).
Traded threes began the fourth and showed that the winning team was going to have to fight for victory. Under three minutes in the game, Oglethorpe gained control until Kahoro nailed a three to shut it down and tie the game so Elly Callihan's jumper could secure the final lead for the Vikings.
The Petrels tried to step back in and foul to gain the possession, but late free throws for the Vikings gained them the SAA victory!
Berry Women's Basketball is set to host the first round of the SAA Tournament on Sunday, February 18th at 1:00 PM ET against Birmingham-Southern. Stay tuned to berryvikings.com for more information soon.
