#RV/22 Brewers Earn 20th Straight Victory

Poughkeepsie, NY – Junior Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) poured in a season-high 24 points and sophomore Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) totaled 23 points as the #RV/22 Vassar College Women's Basketball team earned its 20th straight victory with a 76-51 home win over RIT Friday evening.

 

Vassar improves to 21-1 overall on the season and 15-0 in Liberty League play, while RIT moves to 8-14 overall and 7-8 in conference action.

 

First Half

  • After scoring the first four points of the contest, Vassar fell behind 5-4 in the early going on a pair of Ansley Orrell free-throws just under three minutes into the contest.
  • Vassar quicky regained the lead on a McDermed triple, but the Brewers were unable to push their advantage past three points until back-to-back buckets from McDermed and Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) gave the Brewers a 16-11 edge.
  • Two Tash Thompson (Los Altos Hills, CA) free-throws in the final seconds of the opening period gave the Brewers their largest lead of the quarter, at 21-13, before carrying a 21-15 lead into the second frame.
  • Harvey scored the first five points of the second frame to push the Vassar lead to double-figures for the first time at 26-15.
  • The Brewers would hold a lead of at least five points throughout the second period and following four straight points from McDermed to close out the half, went into the intermission with a 38-28 advantage.
  • Vassar shot 36.4-percent from the floor over the opening 20 minutes and went 3-for-13 from three-point range.
  • RIT was held to 29.6-percent shooting in the first half, including a 2-for-10 effort from three-point range.
  • McDermed led all scorers at the break with 15 points, going 6-for-11 from the floor.
  • Harvey scored 14 first half points, hitting a pair of three-pointers and going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

 

Second Half

  • Vassar got a McDermed jumper and a free-throw from Harvey early in the third frame to open a 41-28 lead.
  • RIT responded with the next nine points to slice its disadvantage to 41-37 on an Erin DiPaola bucket with 5:40 left in the stanza.
  • Vassar came back with a Gelb three-point play that started a 9-0 run of its own, pushing the advantage back out to 50-37.
  • Gelb hit another jumper with 1:45 left in the quarter that gave the Brewers a 54-39 lead, its largest to that point in the game.
  • Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) closed out the period with a three-pointer at the horn that gave Vassar a 57-44 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • Vassar broke the game open with an 11-0 run to open the final frame. Harvey scored nine of the 11 points in the run and gave the Brewers a 68-44 lead with 4:04 left in the contest.
  • Another Ahearn three-pointer with 1:27 left in the game, gave the Brewers a game-high 26-point lead, at 74-48.
  • A Mo Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) jumper in the final minute gave the Brewers the final 25-point advantage.
  • Vassar improved to 45.2-percent shooting in the second half and connected on a trio of three-pointers.
  • RIT shot 26.7-percent in the second frame and also knocked down three triples.

 

For The Brewers

  • Harvey recorded a season-high 24 points and reached at east 20 points in a game for the sixth time this season. Harvey finished the tilt 6-for-17 from the floor and 10-for-11 from the free-throw line to go along with five rebounds, a block and a steal.
  • McDermed tallied 23 points after going 10-for-20 from the floor and totaled seven rebounds, two assists and three steals.
  • Gelb rounded out a trio of players in double-figures with 13 points, adding seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
  • Bella Tawney (Simsbury, CT) led the team and matched the game-high with nine rebounds. Tawney swiped a steal and equaled the team-high with two assists.
  • Ahearn scored six points off the bench and totaled three steals.
  • Caroline Siekman (Islesboro, ME) hauled in seven caroms off the bench for the Brewers.

 

For The Tigers

  • Orrell scored 10 points and swiped two steals.
  • Faye Kaplinski came off the bench to score 10 points and led the team with nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
  • DiPaolo handed out a game-high four assists and chipped in six points and four rebounds.
  • Kaitlyn Bockelman produced seven points and seven rebounds for the Tigers.

Game Statistics

  • Vassar finished the night shooting 40.6-percent and went 6-for-24 from three-point range.
  • RIT was held to 28.1-percent shooting and finished 5-for-21 from long distance.
  • Vassar outscored the Tigers 18-14 from the free-throw line.
  • The Brewers closed the night with a 26-4 advantage in points off of miscues.
  • Vassar dominated the paint, outscoring the Tigers 34-18 inside.
  • The Brewers finished up the win with a 15-11 edge in second chance scoring.

  • The Brewers play their final home regular season game Saturday afternoon when they take on RPI.
