Dumont Nets 16 in Knights Loss to RIT, 65-53

Rochester, NY – Three-pointers proved to be the difference on Saturday as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team couldn't keep pace with RIT's strong effort from long-range with the Golden Knights falling 65-53 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 4-17 overall and 2-12 in conference games, while RIT moved to 8-12 and 7-6. Clarkson will complete its road games next weekend when the team faces Union College and Ithaca College.

Clarkson had troubles shooting in the first quarter, going only 2-for-9 from the floor with six misses from distance, though Raelin Burns went 5-for-6 from the free throw line to keep the Knights within quick striking distance. RIT jumped out to an 8-1 lead after an Ansley Orrell 3-pointer at 6:57, but Clarkson trailed by only one three minutes later. A jumper, 3-pointer, and another jumper allowed the Tigers to close the quarter up by eight points. In the second, Kaitlyn Bockelman's 3-pointer at 5:05 saw RIT nearly double-up the Knights at 28-15. Clarkson responded with an 8-2 run, including a 3-pointer from Veronica Tache at 3:30, to put the Knights down by just seven. Unfortunately for the visitors, Bockelman hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to return the margin to double figures.

Clarkson got back to within single digits in the first two minutes, but two small runs gave RIT a substantial lead. An 8-0 run early in the third, capped by an Orrell 3-pointer at 5:05 made the score 45-27, and another 7-0 run saw an Orrell 3-pointer sandwiched between layups from Faye Kaplinski. Though Clarkson would trail by as many as 21 points early in the fourth quarter, the Knights battled back to make things interesting. In a stretch of five minutes, Clarkson went on a 14-2 run to the cut the margin back to under 10 after a layup from Emma Chambers with 1:39 remaining. That would be as close as it would get, however, with RIT making a handful of free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.

Junior Cassidy Dumont shot 7-for-12 from the floor for a team-best 16 points, while both Raelin Burns and Bella Doyle tossed in nine points for the Knights.

For RIT, Ansley Orrell made five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points. Bockelman had nine points and eight rebounds and Kaplinski ended with 11 points.  The Tigers made 10 3-pointers in the game.
