Balanced scoring and defense lead Redlands Women's Basketball past Whittier

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's basketball team (9-9, 5-5) pulled away in the fourth quarter as they took down Whittier College 70-65 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action inside Currier Gym on Saturday night.

After holding a couple of small leads in the first two minutes, the Poets were able to take a three-point lead, 9-6, at the 7:18 mark. Colbi Zorich, however, converted on an and-one to tie the game at nine.

Leaya Mckinney continued her strong play off the bench as she converted on inside on a foul and at the line for three points as the Bulldogs led by five, 18-13.

Carly Hicks made a three to begin the second as the Bulldogs were up by their largest margin, 21-15. Whittier would go on an 8-0 run and retook the lead for the first time since the middle of the first.

Hicks and AJ Wick combined for four points in the last 1:11 of the second as they went from down three to only trailing by one, 30-29, at the half.

The first five minutes of the third quarter were won by the Poets, but the final five minutes were won by the Bulldogs as they went from down four, 43-39, to up four, 51-47, with 49 seconds remaining and they went into the final 10 minutes up by two.

In the first six minutes of the final quarter Redlands held the lead or were tied, but Whittier took a 63-61 lead with 3:07 to go. The Bulldogs, however, went on a 9-0 run as they got the win. During the run Wick and Aliyah Anderson each made their two free throws and Zorich made the game-winning shot as she converted another and-one.

Zorich finished with a game-high 23 points (9-16 FG, 5-6 FT) and eight rebounds. Hicks had 14 points (3-4 FG, 7-7 FT), Anderson had an all-around game 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists, and Wick had 11 points (3-7 FG, 5-6 FT) and nine rebounds.
