Vassar Takes Regular Season Series From Clarkson

Potsdam, NY – Junior Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) led three players in double-figures with a team-high 18 points as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team ran its winning streak to 16 games with a 67-48 road victory at Clarkson Friday evening.

 

Vassar improves to 17-1 overall on the season with the victory and to 11-0 in conference play, while Clarkson falls to 3-15 overall and 1-10 in Liberty League action.

 

First Half

  • Clarkson got off to a quick start, jumping out to an 11-4 lead on the strength of three-pointers from Cassidy Dumont and Raelin Burns.
  • Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) brought the Brewers back to within a single possession with back-to-back buckets, cutting the disadvantage to 11-8 with a layup at the 3:22 mark of the opening period.
  • A Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) triple extended the Vassar run to 7-0 and knotted the score at 11-11 with just under two minutes left in the stanza.
  • Elizabeth Aiossa converted a layup in the final minute, the Golden Knights' first field goal since the 5:02 mark, to give Clarkson a 13-11 lead through 10 minutes of play.
  • A Naiya Kurnik (Fallbrook, CA) three-pointer opened the second quarter scoring and gave Vassar it's first lead of the game, at 14-13, 37 seconds into the frame.
  • After falling behind 16-14, the Brewers strung together six straight points to push their advantage to 20-16 on a Gelb lay-in with 6:31 left before halftime.
  • Vassar would remain in front until a Burns layup gave Clarkson a 23-22 lead with 3:31 remaining in the quarter.
  • The two sides would trade the lead three times in the final 2:33 of the half before a Gelb free-throw in the closing seconds sent the Brewers into the intermission carrying a slim 28-27 advantage.
  • Vassar finished the first half shooting 37.5-percent overall and went 2-for-7 from three-point range.
  • Clarkson converted at 35.5-percent and connected on four of its 15 three-point attempts.
  • Gelb led the Brewers' scoring attack in the first half with nine points after going 4-for-6 from the floor.
  • Burns led all scorers at the break with 11 points, going 4-for-7 with a pair of three-pointers.

 

Second Half

  • Coming out of the break, Vassar scored the first six points of the third period to open a 34-27 advantage with 7:29 left in the frame.
  • A Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) three-pointer moved the Brewers in front by double-figures for the first time, at 39-29.
  • Gelb converted a lay-in midway through the quarter to push Vassar in front 42-29, giving the Brewers their largest lead of the game to that point.
  • Clarkson rallied late in the period, scoring five of the final six points to cut its deficit to 47-40 with 10 minutes left to play. Dumont closed the quarter with a jumper in the closing seconds to being the Golden Knights to within seven.
  • Vasar spread its lead back to 52-42 on another Harvey three-pointer early in the fourth quarter and from that point the Brewers would not allow Clarkson closer than eight points.
  • A Gelb bucket with 2:32 left to play started a 9-0 closing run for the Brewers, capped by a Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) three-pointer.
  • Vassar improved to 48.5-percent shooting after halftime and went 4-for-9 from three-point range.
  • Clarkson was held to 26.1-percent overall and went 2-for-10 from bonus distance.

 

For The Brewers

  • Gelb paced the Vassar scoring attack with 18 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the floor. Gelb closed out a double-double with 11 rebounds and added three assists and a pair of steals.
  • Kurnik and Harvey each tallied 10 points with Harvey canning a pair of three-pointers and hauling in eight rebounds.
  • Kurnik closed the win with six caroms, five assists and three steals.
  • McDermed led all players with 12 rebounds, adding nine points while joining Kurnik with a game-high five assists. McDermed finished a strong evening with two blocks and a trio of steals.
  • Bella Tawney (Simsbury, CT) totaled eight points and nine rebounds.
  • Caroline Siekman (Islesboro, ME) hauled in six rebounds and chipped in five points.

 

For The Golden Knights

  • Burns led all players with 21 points, going 6-for-13 overall and 3-for-5 from three-point range.
  • Dumont contributed 13 points, two assists and three steals.
  • Bella Doyla paced Clarkson with nine rebounds and scored six points.
  • Addie Kea led the team with four assists.

Game Statistics

  • Vassar shot 43.1-percent for the game and went 6-for-16 from three-point range.
  • Clarkson was held to 31.5-percent shooting and a 6-for-25 effort from three-point range.
  • Vassar secured 21 offensive rebounds and finished the night with a 16-0 edge in second chance scoring.
  • Points in the paint went to the Brewers 30-16.

  • Vassar rounds out a seven-game road trip with a visit to St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon.
  • Clarkson plays host to Bard on Saturday.
