Offensive Boards the Difference as Clarkson falls to St. Lawrence, 66-50

Potsdam, NY – Scoring on virtually all of its second-chance opportunities in the second half, St. Lawrence was able to pull away from the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team in the final 20 minutes, as the Golden Knights dropped a 66-50 Liberty League decision on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 3-14 overall and 1-9 in Liberty League games, while St. Lawrence improved to 7-9 and 6-4. Clarkson faces Vassar and Bard this weekend at Alumni Gym to close out its seven-game home streak.

Clarkson jumped out in front with four quick points in the first two minutes, but for the rest of the first quarter, the two teams essentially traded points, closing out the period tied at 11-11. That changed in the second quarter, as St. Lawrence scored the first eight points of the period, producing a 10-0 run going back to the opening quarter. The Saints' lead expanded to nine on two occasions, the first time coming on a Jackie Malley 3-pointer that made it 22-13, but Clarkson closed out the half with two 3-pointers from Lexi Huiatt and Emma Chambers to put the margin at three at the break.

Neither team shot particularly well in the first half, as the Knights were able to stay close despite St. Lawrence's 11 offensive rebounds, which resulted in only three second-chance points.

The Saints opened the second half with 12 straight points as the Knights couldn't get on the scoreboard until Raelin Burns hit a pair of free throws at the 4:43 mark. The margin expanded to as many as 21 points early in the fourth quarter, but Clarkson was able to get back into the contest with some offensive rebounds and timely second-chance points. Raelin Burns hit a 3-pointer with six minutes remaining to reduce the gap to 11 points, but that is as close as it would get down the stretch.

Raelin Burns led the Knights with 12 points and Bella Doyle finished with 10 points. Emma Chambers scored nine on 3-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc, and Lexi Huiatt chipped in eight points in 15 minutes off the bench.

For St. Lawrence, Elizabeth Flynn had a double-double on 18 points and 14 rebounds while also contributing three steals and three blocked shots. Jackie Malley scored 17 points and Cam Roberts contributed 16 points.
