Burns Nets 16 in Knights' Loss to William Smith

Potsdam, NY – No particular run did in the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team, but William Smith steadily built its lead throughout the contest to send the Golden Knights to a 73-56 defeat in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 3-13 overall and 1-8 in conference games, while William Smith won its fourth game of the year, both overall and in league, to move to 4-13 and 4-6. Clarkson continues its streak at home with a game against St. Lawrence University on Tuesday.

William Smith opened the game with the first five points, but Clarkson responded with a 9-2 run, taking the lead on a layup from Bella Doyle at 5:55. The Herons regained the advantage and hit a few shots late in the quarter to go up 23-17, finishing off the period with a layup from Miranda Martin.

In the second, Molly Walsh hit a 3-pointer to put William Smith up by nine. Clarkson got the lead down to six on two occasions, only to see a pair of free throws from Brooke Jarvis late in the quarter put the Herons up by 10 for the first time. A put back from Jarvis in the waning moments of the period had the margin at 12 at the break.

In the third quarter, Raelin Burns pulled the Knights to within single digits as she nailed two 3-pointers, making the score 39-31 with 6:27 remaining. William Smith then got two 3-pointers at the other end, including a four-point play to rebuild its advantage to double digits. That is where it would remain for the rest of the contest, as the Herons would claim a 17-point victory.

Raelin Burns led the Knights with 16 points, shooting 6-for-11 from the floor, while Cassidy Dumont chipped in 15 points. Addie Kea also had 11 points and our assists in the contest.

For William Smith, Amelia McCulley shot 8-for-13 from the floor for a game-high 18 points. Brooke Jarvis had 16 points, 16 rebounds, and four assists, and Mara Bledsoe was 5-for-9 for 13 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds.
