Women's Basketball Wins Grudge Match Over Washington College, 47-43

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team concluded its two-game homestand with a matchup against Washington College Wednesday night, topping the Shorewomen 47-43 in front of the home crowd. The Blue Jays' 47 points were the fewest they've scored on the season, but were enough to best a stout Washington College program and extend their win streak to 13.

Michaela O'Neil led the way with a game-high 17 points, with Greta Miller (14) also finishing in double figures. Miller was everywhere in the win, adding a game-high 13 rebounds as well as team-best marks in assists (2), steals (2) and blocks (2) in 37 minutes.

Defense was on display early in an opening quarter in which Hopkins (14-1, 10-0 Centennial) scored just 14 points and the Shorewomen (7-7, 4-5 Centennial) were held without a field goal. Free throws from both sides opened the scoring at 2-2 before a 6-0 run sent the Blue Jays ahead 8-2. Two more freebies stopped the run with 2:43 remaining in the quarter and would be the final points Washington College would score, with a frame-ending 6-0 run sending Hopkins into the break up 14-4.

The trend continued into the second quarter where both teams scored just eight points — tied for the second fewest the Jays had scored in a quarter all season. Despite also not hitting a 3-pointer in the half for the first time this year, Hopkins' own defense was enough to enter halftime in front 22-12.

Scoring picked up in the third quarter, as the Shorewomen surpassed their entire first-half tally with 18 points compared to just 12 for the Blue Jays, including the first and only two 3-pointers of the game from Washington College's Abby Meredith. The score was within three at the 2:49 mark and just two a minute later, but O'Neil and Macie Feldman responded to stay in front 34-30 heading into the fourth.

The game stayed tight four minutes into the fourth quarter with a driving layup from the Shorewomen making it a two-point game once again, but it was Hopkins converting a Miller jumper into a game-clinching 9-2 run to go ahead 45-36. Washington College made one final push after Karry Kelliher converted back-to-back and-ones to make it 46-43, but a pair of clutch offensive rebounds by Jadyn Murray and Miller following missed free throws as well as a 1-2 trip from Feldman sealed the 47-43, hard-fought win.

Next up for the Blue Jays is a road matchup against Muhlenberg Saturday, Jan. 20, with tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m.
