Erin Lillis reaches 1,000-point milestone while leading Grinnell past Beloit

GRINNELL, Iowa - Erin Lillis '24 joined elite company while leading the Grinnell College women's basketball team to a key Midwest Conference victory Wednesday night at Darby Gymnasium.

 

Lillis became just the 11th player in Pioneer history to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career as Grinnell snapped a two-game losing streak by disposing of Beloit College 65-57. The win was Grinnell's seventh in a row against the Buccaneers and ninth in a row over the visitors at Darby.

 

Lillis reached the 1,000-point mark in just 2-½ seasons and 58 games. She is the first Grinnell player to reach the milestone since Tyria Heath four seasons ago.

 

Lillis scored a game-high 18 points for Grinnell, while Sara Booher '25 posted another double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She has 405 boards in her career, which ranks 16th in program history. Booher also blocked four shots.

 

Lillis added five assists and four steals, the latter figure pushing her career total to 91 which is 17th in program history. Eva Carchidi '24 added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Nikki Ware '25 scored 10 points.

 

Grinnell trailed by two points after the first period before erupting for a 22-12 scoring edge in the second frame. Lillis reached the 1,000-point milestone with a layup on a fast break with 4:50 left in the half. A bucket later in the period put Grinnell ahead by double digits at before Beloit, 2-5 in the MWC and 4-11 overall, cut the gap to 40-32 by halftime.

 

Beloit closed the margin to a point in the third quarter, but Grinnell rebounded and was ahead 54-49 at the end of the frame.

 

In the fourth quarter, Grinnell took eight-point leads twice on a 3-pointer by Ware and close-range bucket by Booher. After Beloit closed within four at the 3:42 mark, Booher drained a free throw, Lillis connected on a layup and Ware cashed in on a trey to make it 65-55 with 1:19 left to all but secure the win.

 

Grinnell is off until next Wednesday when it plays at Monmouth College.
