RAMAPO, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (4-11, 2-6 NJAC) was topped 59-49 by Ramapo (9-5, 6-2 NJAC) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road game Jan. 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Pioneers trailed by three (25-22) to begin the second half before the Roadrunners opened the third quarter on a 12-3 run to extend their advantage to double figures (37-25) with 5:35 on the clock.
- With four consecutive makes from the foul line by sophomore Luna Kirby to close out the frame, William Paterson trimmed the deficit to seven (43-36).
- An early basket in the fourth quarter by Ramapo pushed the lead to nine (45-36), but the Pioneers responded with an 8-2 run that was capped by a 3-pointer by junior Jade Martinez to make it a three-point game (47-44) with 8:19 remaining.
- However, the Roadrunners immediately countered with a 10-0 run to push the advantage back to double figures before going on to secure the home win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sophomore Renee Wells finished with a team-high 12 points to go with three rebounds, two steals and a block.
- Senior Brianna Smith logged a 10-point outing with three boards, two steals and a block.
- Freshman Mattison Chiera tallied nine points and five rebounds.
- Sophomore Patricia Walsh reeled in a team-best 10 boards.
- Kirby scored a career-high eight points.
