A Strong Second Quarter Propels Women's Basketball to a Win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team used a big second quarter to go into halftime up by double digits. The Cardinals outscored the Bengals 22-12 in the quarter helping them pull away and ultimately win the game 66-51. The Cardinals were led offensively by Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) who scored a new career high 24 points and added three rebounds.

Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y. / Saranac) also contributed to the offensive effort as she had 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Others who contributed to the overall effort include Mya Smith (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Roy C. Ketcham) who had a very balanced game with seven points, four rebounds, and four assists and Lauren LaFountain (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs) who had six points. Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) had five rebounds and five blocks while Selma Deisz (Bekkestua, Norway / Nadderud VGS) added four assists and four rebounds.

For the Bengals, both Emma Cohen and Maddy Stearns had 12 points each. Grace Carey was also a part of their overall effort as she had 11 points.

The Cardinals had a great shooting night as they went 44.2% from the field and 48.0% from the three netting a Plattsburgh State record game high 12 threes in one game. The Bengals shot just 30.4% from the field and 16.7% from the three only making two which was the difference as the three ball was falling for the Cardinals. The Cardinal bench gave significant contributions as they outscored the Bengals 31-12. The Cardinals lost the turnover battle 23-16 but won the rebounding battle 41-33 garnishing 15 second chance points compared to the Bengals 10.

Plattsburgh moves to 5-5 (2-2 SUNYAC) and will be back in action Tuesday Jan. 9 at 5:30 pm as they travel to Potsdam. Buffalo State falls to 3-7 (0-3 SUNYAC) and will be back in action Tuesday Jan. 9 as well as they go on the road to face Brockport at 4 pm.

The Cardinals were in control from start to finish as they never surrendered the lead. Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) got the Cardinals on the board with a three followed by a Walcott layup and a Smith three as the Cardinals quickly jumped to an 8-0 lead. Stearns got the Bengals on the board on a jumper with a little over seven minutes left in the quarter. An Adiya Jones jumper made the score 10-9 and cut the Cardinal lead to one with a little under two minutes to play. Cardinals closed the quarter with five straight points from Couture that made the score 15-9 Cardinals.

The second quarter is where the Cardinals pulled away. Stearns opened the quarter with a layup that made the score 15-11 Cardinals. From the 5:40 mark until the 2:56 mark the Cardinals went on an 8-0 run that stretched the lead to double digits and made the score 28-16. Wilson closed the quarter with two threes that made the score 37-21 Cardinals.

Carey opened the third with a jumper followed by a Couture layup that made the score 39-23. The Cardinals were held scoreless from the 4:58 mark until the 1:06 mark when Wilson made a three that made the score 45-30 Cardinals. The Cardinals closed the quarter 49-30.

Carly Atty opened the fourth with a jumper followed by a jumper from Wilson that made the score 51-32. The Cardinals controlled the fourth as they stretched their lead to 20 on a three from Wilson at the 2:49 mark that made the score 62-42. The Bengals closed the quarter on a 9-1 run that started at the 1:50 mark and lasted until the end of the game and made the final score 66-51.
