Women's Basketball Shoots Past Gordon, 102-83

DUDLEY, Mass. (1/4/23) – On Thursday evening, the Nichols College women's basketball team delivered when it counted and took down in-conference opponent Gordon College by a score of 102-83 at the Nichols Athletic Center.

With the win, the Bison snap a four-game skid and improve to 5-6 (2-2 CCC) overall, while the Fighting Scots fall to 1-11 (0-4 CCC).

The Bison enjoyed the spoils of their best shooting performance this season, as the team finished 44.1% (41-of-93) from the field with 31 points off the bench. Graduate Summer Klein topped the charts for the Bison with 21 points scored, along with five rebounds, four assists and six steals.  Senior Abrianna Vazquez recorded 19 points, while Leandra Ortiz notched 11 on the evening with both players adding five helpers. Sophomore Adriana Romano and freshman Angie Coletti each scored 10 points. As a team, the Bison forced 51 Gordon turnovers and hauled in 34 steals.

Neither team wasted any time in getting the offense up and running in the first frame, with both combining for 49 points scored through the opening 10 minutes of play. The largest lead of the quarter belonged to Bison at the 2:33 mark on a three pointer by freshman Rylee Barrieault, which put the hosts ahead 22-17. However, the Fighting Scots would hold the lead by one point at 25-24 entering the second quarter.  

Trailing 29-28 at the 7:15 point of the second quarter, the Bison seized the lead for good with a 14-0 run which gave them a 42-29 advantage over the Fighting Scots. The remainder of the quarter saw evenly divided offense between both teams, with Nichols maintaining a 10-point, 51-41 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bison put the game well out of reach. Beginning at the 4:15 mark, Nichols went on to outscore the Scots 19-4, which furthered their advantage to a game-high 18 points at 76-58. Nichols then went on to push the lead to 25 points with 4:00 remaining in the game and capped off the offensive production with a Vazquez jumper in the paint at 2:50.

Nichols next matches up against the University of New England (8-4, 3-1 CCC) for a conference matinee this Saturday, January 6th for the first of a three-game road trip. Coverage begins at 1:00 PM from Coach Beaudry's Court
