Women's Basketball Flies Past Kenyon, 82-38, in 2023 Finale

GALLATIN, TN – The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team took on Kenyon College on Day 2 of the Music City Classic Saturday evening, controlling the game from the opening tip en route to a comfortable 82-38 win at Pickel Field House. The margin of victory was the Blue Jays' largest of the season — their 38 points allowed was a season-low — and extends their win streak to nine heading into the new year.

Macie Feldman had a career day in her first start of the season, finishing with a game-high 15 points and team-high 11 rebounds, both of which represent new career-best totals. The sophomore was a force on the glass all night, racking up an incredible eight offensive rebounds, leading Hopkins to hold a 36-8 advantage in second-chance points.

Also cracking double figures were Greta Miller (14), Jadyn Murray (11) and Elisabeth Peebles (10), with Beth Corelli's eight points also representing a season-best tally. The Blue Jays' 61 rebounds is a new high mark for the season and tied for the most in a single game since 2016.

Miller got things started for Hopkins (10-1, 6-0 Centennial) in Saturday's contest, hitting a layup through contact to ignite a 7-0 run to shoot the Blue Jays ahead early. A pair of free throws got the Owls (2-10, 0-1 NCAC) on the board, but buckets from Feldman, Miller, Murray and Michaela O'Neil built Hopkins lead up to 16-6 after one.

The second quarter was the most tightly-contested of the evening with Hopkins holding a slight 21-14 advantage on the back of an impressive effort from Feldman, who scored eight in the frame. Peebles was the first to score as part of a quarter-opening 10-2 run that made it 26-8. The lead would hover between 13-16 after Kenyon got its own offense going, before Feldman outscored the Owls 7-6 in the final four minutes to send the Jays into the break up 37-20.

Saturday's second half told the same story, with Hopkins opening the third quarter with an 8-2 run on buckets from Feldman, Murray and Miller to go up 45-22. Kenyon got two points back on a pair of free throws from Mikayla Rudolph only for the Blue Jays to go on another 7-0 run of their own capped by a baseline jumper by Grace Soltes.

The Owls first and only 3-pointer of the game stopped the run, with Kenyon getting as close as 23 before a layup by Maya Johnson and a corner-three by Peebles in the final two minutes gave Hopkins a commanding 60-32 lead entering the fourth.

With the benches cleared for the final 10 minutes of play, Hopkins rode the hot hands of Corelli and Zoe Soule en route to the decisive victory. With the score 65-34 just under three minutes into the quarter, Corelli took it upon herself to put the game out of reach, going on a personal 8-0 run — including two 3-pointers — to balloon the lead back to 70-35. A Soltes layup made it a 40-point game before it was Soule's turn to take over, with the senior scoring five of the Blue Jays final seven points to secure the dominant 82-38 win.

Hopkins will look to carry their nine-game win streak into the new year as they return to Centennial Conference play Saturday, Jan. 6 with a matchup against Ursinus. Tip-off for their first matchup of 2024 is set for 1 p.m.
