ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - After trailing by 11 points at halftime Saturday, the furthest thing from the minds of the Grinnell College women's basketball coaches and players were school records.
But that's exactly what the Pioneers accomplished as they totally turned the tables on Keene State College, setting program records for fewest points allowed in a half and quarter en route to a 46-33 victory at the St. Pete Classic.
Grinnell held the New Hampshire school to no points in the fourth quarter and just six points in the second half, both all-time bests for the program.
The victory pushed Grinnell to 8-4 on the season, as the team is off to its best start since the 2003-04 campaign. The Pioneers limited Keene State to 17.6 percent shooting from the field, the lowest by an opponent this season.
Several Grinnell players enjoyed career-best performances in the victory, including Eva Carchidi's 24 16 points and Sara Booher's '25 16 rebounds and five blocked shots. Booher now has 77 blocks in her career, which ranks fifth in program history.
Erin Lillis '24 dished out a career-high six assists, boosting her career total to 159 which is 18th in Grinnell history. Nikki Ware '25 added seven rebounds, which is her best ever.
The Pioneers led 13-9 after one period, but the 4-5 Owls outscored Grinnell 18-3 in the second period for a 27-16 halftime cushion. Whatever message coach Dana Harrold had for her players at halftime worked wonders, as Grinnell outscored Keene State 17-6 in the third period.
Carchidi opened the quarter with a 3-pointer, Booher sank a free throw and Carchidi nailed a short jumper to bring Grinnell within 27-22. After a free throw by Keene State, Booher scored on a layup and Ware drained a free throw to make it a one-point game.
The Owls countered with a bucket and 3-pointer before Carolyn Pierce '27 hit a 3-pointer, layup and free throw to force a 33-all tie by the end of the period.
Aiyana Rockwell '24 opened the fourth quarter with a trey and the Pioneers never looked back as they secured the victory. Not only did they score 13 points in the period, but held the Owls - who missed all 17 of their field goal tries in the quarter - scoreless in the same span.
Grinnell is back in Midwest Conference action Thursday with a game at Ripon College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
