In a New York minute, the nationally-ranked Hope College women's basketball team took control at Lehman College.
The Flying Dutch rolled to a 93-31 victory over Lehman on Friday in the championship game of the CUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament at Lehman after jumping to a 15-2 lead during the opening six minutes.
The second-highest-scoring game of the season propelled Hope to its eighth consecutive victory.
The Flying Dutch ended 2023 with a 12-1 overall record after winning twice in the Bronx in two days, including a 73-57 victory against Salem State (Mass.) on Thursday.
Hope — No. 12 in the most recent WBCA Division III poll and No. 16 in the d3hoops.com rankings — will return to action in the new year on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 3 p.m. against MIAA rival and nationally-ranked Trine University at DeVos Fieldhouse.
Freshman guard Chloe Brunsberg (Chaska, Minnesota / Southwest Christian HS) was named Tournament MVP.
Sophomore guard Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) joined Brunsberg on the all-tournament team.
The Flying Dutch never trailed. After Lehman (2-9) tied the score at 2-2 48 seconds into the game, Hope ripped off a 13-0 run.
The lead grew to 22-8 by the end of the first quarter and 52-13 by halftime.
The Flying Dutch scored 30 points off of Lehman turnovers and 21 second-chance points during the first half.
All 14 Hope players scored. Three shared game-high honors with 12 points apiece: senior center Raven Jemison (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Kentwood), junior guard Jada Garner (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow), and junior guard Olivia Bellows (Lake City, Michigan / Lake City).
Jemison also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Brunsberg chipped in 11 points.
Sophomore forward Lily Miller (Norton Shores, Michigan / Mona Shores) netted a season-best nine points.
Junior forward Hannah Kurncz (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt) added eight points, also a season-high.
It was Hope's first meeting against Lehman. The Flying Dutch earned a 45-19 advantage on the boards.
Lehman's top scorer was Ramatoulye Diallo with 10 points.
