THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 89, Bridgewater State University 82
- Records: MIT (5-2); Bridgewater State (3-4)
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Rockwell Cage)
- The Lead: A pair of runs in the second half helped power the MIT women's basketball team to an 89-82 victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday night. One of five Engineers to reach double digits in scoring, graduate student Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) led the team with 20 points and eight assists. Kylie Grassi tallied a game-high 31 points and five steals to go along with five assists for the Bears.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The opening frame was a back-and-forth affair as there were four ties and eight lead changes. Trailing 19-15, a three pointer by Sydney Bradbury ignited a 10-3 run which put Bridgewater State in front with 58 seconds left. MIT replied with a layup by junior Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.), setting off an exchange of baskets and the Bears holding a 27-26 edge at the end of the quarter.
- The visitors increased their cushion to 32-26 after a Grassi free throw at the 7:32 mark. Sparked by a jumper from junior Olivia Joseph (Newtown Square, Pa.), the Engineers went on a 10-2 run in a two-minute span. Both teams traded baskets until Grassi drained three straight shots, giving Bridgewater State a 42-38 lead with 1:48 on the clock. The Bears stayed ahead down the stretch as a trey from Bradbury moved the score to 47-42 at halftime.
- Beginning with a three-pointer by Antonakakis just 13 seconds into the third quarter, MIT put together a 17-6 run during the first 5:44 of the frame. Bridgewater State battled back as Bradbury's trey brought it within 62-61 with 2:04 on the clock. The Engineers countered with a 5-1 burst to create some breathing room at the end of the period.
- The hosts carried the momentum into the fourth quarter as a 10-4 run, capped by a three pointer from first year Rachael Zacks (Glencoe, Ill.), gave MIT a 77-66 advantage at the 7:33 mark. Despite the deficit, the Bears continued to attack as they came within five points on three occasions, the last at 86-81 on Emily Quinn's three-point play with 1:11 remaining. During the Engineers' ensuing possession, junior Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) buried a three with 44 seconds left to secure the victory.
