Hopkins Pulls Away From Bryn Mawr, Tops Owls 67-39

BRYN MAWR, PA – The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team outscored host Bryn Mawr 46-17 in the second and third quarters combined to fuel a 67-39 Centennial Conference victory over the Owls on Thursday evening.  With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial, while the Owls slip to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial; Johns Hopkins has now won four straight.

The Owls led 13-11 after the first quarter and were up 15-11 before the Blue Jays used a 19-4 run to turn the four-point deficit into a 30-19 lead with 90 seconds remaining in the opening half.

After a pair of Hannah Mack free throws gave the Owls the 15-11 lead just four seconds into the second quarter, the Blue Jays responded by scoring the next 12 points to grab the lead for good.  Four players scored during the spree for the Blue Jays, who used four points from Michaela O'Neil and a three-pointer from freshman Layla Henderson to fuel the spurt.

Jessica Smith sandwiched a pair of jumpers for the Owls around a Kara Milliken layup for the Blue Jays to trim the deficit to 25-19, but a Greta Miller three-point play and an Elisabeth Peebles jumper gave Hopkins the 30-19 lead.

Johns Hopkins led 31-24 at the half and essentially put the game away by scoring the first 10 points of the third quarter – all in a span of less than two minutes – to extend the lead to 41-24.  A Peebles triple just 17 seconds after the break ignited the 10-point run, which included another Miller three-point play and a jumper from O'Neil before Jadyn Murray capped the spree with a pair of free throws.

The Blue Jay defense harassed the Owls into a 1-of-12 shooting performance in the third quarter and eventually outscored them 26-6 in the period to extend out to a 57-30 lead after three quarters.  Peebles (7) and Macie Feldman (6) combined for 13 of Hopkins' 26 points in the period and the Blue Jays turned nine offensive rebounds into 15 third-quarter points.

Bryn Mawr was never closer than 23 in the fourth quarter and Hopkins led by as many as 30 at 66-36 on a Natalie Mann jumper late in the game.

Peebles (11), Henderson (11) and O'Neil (10) all scored in double figures to lead the way for the Blue Jays, who saw 12 players dent the scoring column in the victory.  The 11 points for Henderson are a career high, while Peebles added a career-best 10 rebounds to her 11 points for her first career double-double.  Miller narrowly missed a double-double of her own as she had eight points and 10 rebounds on the night.

Smith led the Owls with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Mack chipped in with 11 points and four rebounds.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, December 2 when the Blue Jays welcome Muhlenberg to Goldfarb Gym. Note that the start time of the Hopkins-Muhlenberg game is now set for 6 pm.
