Balanced effort helps Presidents roll past Barons

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Three players scored in double figures and a total of 13 Presidents found the scoring column as the Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team rolled to a 75-49 win over visiting Franciscan University of Steubenville in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Salvitti Family Gymnasium. 
 
The victory is the third-straight for the Presidents who improve to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in PAC play. The loss drops the Barons to a 3-6 overall record with 1-4 in conference action.
 
Hannah Archer (Lowell, Ohio / Fort Frye) opened the scoring with a three-point field on W&J's first possession of the game. A few minutes later, W&J built a 10-5 lead on a three-point play by Sarah Berardelli (Ambridge, Pa. / North Catholic). Thar Barons battled to within one point when a basket trimmed the W&J lead to 12-11 at the 5:15 mark. 

W&J registered the final 12 points of the first quarter. A layup by Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) was followed by consecutive triples by Jaden Wan (Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock) and Hannah Archer (Fort Frye / Wheeling) which made it 20-11 at the 2:39 mark. Layups by Wan and Adalynn Cherry (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona Area) closed out the first quarter scoring. 
 
Archer, Halena Hill (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Oakland Catholic), and Bryn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) would convert three-point attempts in the second quarter. Baskets from Meghan Dryburgh (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) and a pair by Berardelli swelled the Presidents lead to 39-17 at the break. Franciscan mustered just six points in the second quarter. 
 
The Red & Black used a scoring surge to swell their commanding lead to 57-19 halfway through the third quarter.  The Presidents put together an 18-2 run over a five-plus minute stretch to open the third. Archer hit on a pair of threes while Cherry and Bezjak also knocked down triples during the third. A layup by Katie Kovalchick (Shelocta, Pa./Indiana) late in the third gave W&J its largest lead of the night. The field goal by Kovalchick made it a 42-point lead at 66-24. 
 
W&J continued to lead comfortably throughout the remainder of the game. The Presidents' sizable lead allowed them to clear it's bench for a good part of the fourth quarter as they finished off a 26-point victory. A total of 13 Presidents scored with three reaching double digits. Shannon Conley (West Mifflin, Pa. / West Mifflin) accounted for seven points in the fourth quarter. 
 
Archer continued to have the hot hand from outside. The sophomore finished with a team-high 15 points and made five-of-nine three point attempts in just 19 minutes of action.

Joining Archer in double figures were Dryburgh and Berardelli. Dryburgh finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals in 20 minutes. Berardelli put together a perfect night from the field. She made all four field goal attempts and three-of-three from the free throw line to rack up 11 points. Cherry finished with a game-high eight assists. 
 
The Presidents exceeded the Barons in all factors. W&J outscored Franciscan in points in the paint 31-15, held a 14-6 margin in second chance points, and a 21-9 advantage in fast break points. The Red & Black finished with a 42.4% field goal percentage and made 10 three-point field goals in 26 attempts. The Presidents out-rebounded the Barons by a 47-37 margin. W&J forced Franciscan to commit 31 turnovers Wednesday evening. W&J outpaced Franciscan 25-2 in terms of bench points.
 
The Presidents will return to action next on the road at Thiel College on Monday, December 6. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Greenville.
