Second Half Comeback Boosts Vikings to Victory

ATLANTA, Ga. - Women's Basketball claimed their first SAA win of the season as they took on Oglethorpe on the road for a victory of 65-57 against the Stormy Petrels.

Ellie Gearing started the game with a pair of foul shots for the teams first lead. They quickly shot up by four when Jaryn Jarrett sunk a deep ball (8-4).

On their home court, Oglethorpe posted a 10-0 run to shut down the Vikings early and force them to fight from behind for the remainder of the first half down 17-16 heading into the second quarter.

The Petrels dominated in the second quarter doubling the Viking's points at 19-8. Berry's efforts from leading scorer Elly Callihan was not enough with just 11 first half points. The score at the half was 35-25, Oglethorpe.

Now it was time for Berry to take ownership and take back the lead. They did just that from the inbound of the ball in the third quarter. Olgethorpe's lead was quickly cut to two in four minutes with Kenadie Lee leading the way with five points.

Callihan's triple tied the game at 38 as the clock struck six minutes and free-throw from her at 3:27 took the lead that would never be gave up. Karlee Armstrong finished off the quarter with made foul shots in the final two minutes and neither team could place the ball through the rim before heading to the fourth quarter at a score of 48-45, Berry.

Holding the Petrels to just 22 second half points, the Vikings defense held strong throughout the final ten minutes of the game. Offensively the team valued each possession and made sure to answer any Oglethorpe baskets with buckets of their own. The score remained close until the final minute when the Petrels tried to foul and gain back the ball for quick points, although they fell unsuccessful and the Vikings claimed their first SAA win of the 2023-24 season.

The team heads to non-conference opponent Covenant College on the 9th of December for a match-up beginning at 2:00 PM ET in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
