Conn College Falls to NYU

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Second-ranked New York University never trailed in an 87-61 victory over Connecticut College on Sunday afternoon at Luce Field House.

The Violets (7-0 overall) used their up-tempo offense to build a large lead in the first half. Caroline Peper led all scorers with 21 points in 23 minutes off the bench, one of three NYU players in double figures.

Conn shot 45 percent for the game but couldn't keep pace. Rebecca Oberman-Levine (Hamden, Conn.) led the Camels with 12 points and added five rebounds and four blocks.

In the opening quarter, a three-pointer by Peper was the catalyst for an 11-2 run that resulted in a 15-6 lead for the visitors. The Camels responded with baskets by Catie Hurley (Walpole, Mass.) and Hallie O'Toole (Wilbraham, Mass.) to cut the deficit to four, but a late three-pointer by Kate Fahey gave NYU a 20-13 advantage at the end of the period.

The Violets outscored the Camels 21-9 in the second quarter to lead by 19 at the break. Belle Pellecchia had three steals and six points in the stanza to lead the charge, as NYU forced seven turnovers in the stanza and cashed them into easy points.

NYU kept rolling in the second half, though the Camels did their best to keep pace. Conn shot 7-for-11 in the final period and got points from nine different players. Avery Burns (Orleans, Mass.) finished with nine points in 12 minutes off the bench, and Arliana Torres (Toms River, N.J.) added eight points, three rebounds and two steals in 21 minutes of action.

The Violets shot just under 51 percent for the game and had 12 players find the scoring column. Mary Kate Fahey shot 4-for-7 from deep and finished with 14 points, and Pellecchia filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, six steals and three assists.

NYU was stout on the defensive end, forcing 20 turnovers and blocking eight shots. The Violets also outscored the Camels 21-2 in points off turnovers.

Conn College (3-5 overall) will next host Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, December 6 at 5:00 p.m.
