- The Lead: The MIT women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as it went on to defeat Brandeis University, 77-60, in a non-conference game on Saturday. Junior Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) powered the Engineers with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting while dishing out four assists. Brooke Reed racked up 14 points, a game-high nine rebounds, and two steals for the Judges.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT gradually established 14-5 lead courtesy of three-pointer by senior Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) midway through the opening frame. The Engineers maintained their small cushion as a free throw by sophomore Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) made the score 21-14 at the end of the quarter.
- Junior Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) drained the opening basket of the second stanza for MIT. However, a jumper by Mollie Obar sparked a 7-2 run that brought Brandeis within 25-21 at the 6:40 mark. On the Engineers' ensuing possession, two free throws from sophomore Brianna Lebrun (Hartford, Conn.) kicked off a 9-2 spurt which gave the hosts their largest lead of the half (34-23) with 3:52 on the clock. The remainder of the frame was balanced as MIT entered halftime with a 39-29 advantage following two free throws by graduate student Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) with three seconds to go.
- The Engineers slowly pulled away in the third quarter as a layup from Nwogu increased the advantage to 57-36 with two minutes on the clock. The Judges ended their three-minute scoring drought with a jumper by Lulu Ohm and then added two free throws by Reed, however, Lebrun responded with a layup with 37 seconds left.
- MIT continued to control the action in the fourth quarter as a free throw by first year Mariam Abdelbarr (Durham, N.C.) made the score 73-48 with 2:40 left to play. Brandeis responded with a 12-4 run to close out the game, as Claire Candella buried back-to-back three-pointers for the Judges' final points.
