Women’s Basketball Falls to Oswego St. in SUNYAC Play

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team fell on the road against Oswego St. on Saturday afternoon, falling 70-54 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup. The Cardinals had a balanced offensive effort as Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) led the way with 12 points but were not able to come back from down double digits. Walcott also added eight rebounds, two steals, and one block. 
 
Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) posted 10 points and two steals. Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) was the next top scorer as she had nine points. Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y. / Saranac) registered eight points and eight rebounds while Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) had seven points and five rebounds. Mya Smith (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Roy C. Ketcham) added to the overall effort with six rebounds, four points, and three assists. 
 
For the Lakers, Chastin Giles and Sydney Hoefs led all scorers with 14 points each. Karleigh Leo and Giavanna White-Principio were also a part of the winning effort as Leo had 11 points and White-Principio led all players with 15 rebounds and added 10 points to post a double-double. 
 
Plattsburgh shot only 30.0% from the floor while Oswego shot 36.8.%. Oswego won the rebounding battle 52-40 and both teams had 15 turnovers. Bench points were the story as Plattsburgh only had 14 and Oswego 34.  

Plattsburgh falls to 3-4 (0-2 SUNYAC) and will be back in action as they play their final game of the 2023 calendar year on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 5:30 pm with a matchup against MiddleburyOswego rises to 5-2 (2-0 SUNYAC) and will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 1 pm with a matchup against SUNY Poly. 
 
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair as Leo opened the first for Oswego with a three and Walcott got the Cardinals on the board with a layup. Shortly after both teams exchanged buckets again as Walcott made a layup and Leo a jumper that made the score 5-4 Lakers. Less than seven minutes to play the Cardinals added three straight points and the Lakers four which made the score 12-7 Lakers. Wilson scored four straight points and made the score 17-14 Lakers at the end of the first. 
 
Mollie James opened the second quarter with a three and Couture got the Cardinals on the board with two made free throws. With a little over six minutes to play both teams traded buckets as Smith made a layup and James a jumper that made the score 24-19 Lakers. With less than four minutes to go, the Cardinals tied the game on a layup from Walcott. Giles responded with a jumper that put the Lakers back ahead 26-24 and then the Lakers scored eight points to end the second quarter with a score of 34-24. 
 
The Cardinals outscored the Lakers 21-16 in the third quarter to mount a comeback after they were down double digits at half. The Cardinals opened the third quarter with four straight points that cut the Lakers lead to six. The Lakers responded with two points that made the score 36-28 Lakers. With less than seven minutes to play both teams exchanged buckets as Greek made a layup, Julia Logana a layup, and Couture a layup that made the score 38-32 Lakers. With less than four minutes to play, Wilson made two free throws that cut the Lakers lead to three. The Cardinals scored four straight points to end the third quarter with a score of 50-45 Lakers. 
 
The fourth quarter is when the Lakers pulled away as they outscored the Cardinals 20-9. The Lakers opened the fourth with an 11-0 run that lasted until the 3:43 mark where Smith made a free throw that made the score 61-46 Lakers. Peterson-Ross responded with a layup that was followed by four points from the Lakers and then a Greek layup that made the score 65-50 Lakers. To end the fourth first-year Rosie Sculco (Amsterdam, N.Y. / Amsterdam) scored her first collegiate points on a layup and Walcott made two free throws that made the final score 70-54 Lakers.
