Women’s Basketball Shines in 72-29 Win over Kenyon

Case Western Reserve University wrapped up its non-conference home schedule on Friday night with a dominating 72-29 win over Kenyon College at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

It was the third-straight victory for the Spartans, who improved to 5-3. Kenyon dropped to 2-5 with the loss. The 43-point win was CWRU's largest margin of victory since a 96-45 win over Hilbert on January 1, 2023.

It was a dominating defensive effort for the Spartans, who held the Owls to under 10 points scored in three of the four quarters and to a 24.0% shooting percentage overall (12-50), including just 7.7% (1-13) from three-point range. CWRU forced the Owls to commit 19 turnovers in the game and outscored Kenyon 19-8 in points off turnovers.

Meanwhile, the Spartans shot a season-high 48.3% (28-58) from the floor, including a season-best 47.4% (9-19) from behind the three-point line. First-year guard Jordyn Call came off the bench to lead all scorers with 16 points, shooting six-of-eight overall and four-of-six from behind the three-point line. Senior forward Kayla Characklis finished with 14 points, shooting seven-of-eight from the floor. Senior guard Sarah Mitchell added eight points, five rebounds, and seven assists. Thirteen different players scored for the Spartans in the game.

The Spartans opened the game with threes from sophomore guard/ forward Emily Plachta and graduate student forward Kate Montgomery on the team's first two possessions as part of a 15-2 run to start the contest. CWRU went on to lead by as many as 17 points in the first quarter and took a 23-7 lead into the second frame. A 21-0 run midway through the second quarter helped the Spartans build their lead to 34 points, 44-10, and after holding the Owls to just five points in the second period, CWRU took a 44-12 lead into halftime.

The Spartans continued to add to their lead throughout the second half, outscoring Kenyon 15-4 in the third period. The Spartans led by as many as 50 points in the game, going ahead 70-20 on a three from Call with 5:11 to play in the game, en route to the 43-point triumph.

CWRU finished the game with a 33-1 edge in points off the bench, a 16-0 advantage in fast break points, and a 30-18 bump in points in the paint. The Spartans also dominated the glass, out-rebounding Kenyon 43-28.

The Spartans will be off until next Saturday, December 9, when CWRU will travel to Granville, Ohio for a 1:00 p.m. game against Denison University.
