Conn Overpowers Eastern Conn., 80-42

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team had to wait nearly two weeks for its first victory of the year, but the Camels did it in emphatic fashion by racing to a 16-point lead late in the first quarter and easing to an 80-42 non-conference decision over Eastern Connecticut State University Sunday evening at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

While Eastern (2-3) was 3-for-11 from the floor with seven turnovers in the first quarter, Conn (1-4) connected on 11 of its first 12 shots inside the three-point stripe and was 12-of-19 overall with only two turnovers in posting the largest winning margin by either team in this 29-game series since Eastern won three consecutive games by more than 50 points in the mid-1970s.

Eastern had won the last four and seven of the last nine in the series heading into the contest.

While Eastern missed five shots and turned the ball over six times on 11 possessions, the Camels were reeling off 16 unanswered points in the first quarter – getting contributions from six different players. In the game, Conn scored a quarter of its points off Eastern's 25 turnovers.

Outrebounded this year by an average of over 11 a game, Conn managed to outrebound Eastern by three and shot 54.2 percent from the floor despite a mark of 35.6 entering the game.

Conn's starters were 19-of-28 (67.9 percent) from the floor. Six-foot sophomore forward Hallie O'Toole led four double-digit scorers for Conn with 16 points, with senior forward Rebecca Oberman-Levine adding 13 points, six rebounds and four assists, with freshman Addi Hunter adding ten points and junior Catie Donadio coming off the bench for ten points.

Six-foot junior Taylor Salato (East Haven) was Eastern's only double-digit scorer, with 12 points. First-year forward Alyssa Paquette (Claremont, NH) and sophomore guard Riley Griffin (Middleborough, MA) each had eight points. Paquette led both teams with seven rebounds while Griffin came off the bench for her first points of the year in eight minutes, connecting on all three of her shots (two from distance).

Eastern hosts No. 4 nationally-ranked Smith College in a non-conference game Thursday at 6 p.m. The Pioneers (4-1) were 30-2 a year ago and won four NCAA games to reach the Final Four.
