Maryville Falls to No. 1 Transylvania

Scots Drop Matchup Against Defending National Champs 72-42

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Maryville faced off against No. 1 ranked Transylvania on Day 1 of the Pat Deacon Classic, falling to the reigning National Champions 72-42 at the Clive M. Beck Center.
 
The Pioneers came out of the gates strong, outscoring the Scots 28-8 in the first quarter. Transylvania opened the game with a 15-2 run through the first five minutes of play.
 
The game was much closer in the final 30 minutes of play, with Transy outscoring MC just 44-34 through the final three quarters.
 
Maryville saw points scored by nine players in the contest, but no individual scored double figures for the Scots. Ella Haney led the pack with eight, followed by Courtney Carruthers with seven points and Emily Allen and Gracyn Grantz with six each.
 
Kadence Stoner and Olivia Cathers led the Scots with five rebounds apiece. The duo also anchored Maryville's defense, with Stoner picking up two blocks and two steals and Cathers recording one of each category.
 
Maryville was just 17-of-58 from the field, good for 29.3 percent while Transy was 25-of-58, a 43.1 percent mark. The Pioneers held the edge in the rebounding matchup as well, recording 45 boards to the Scots' 31.
 
The Scots are back in action for Day 2 of the Pat Deacon Classic on Sunday. They will face off against either Alma or Wisconsin Lutheran for third place in the tournament.
