GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's basketball team is not only out to its best start since the 2016-17 season, but the Pioneers did so in record-breaking fashion.
The Pioneers strolled past Lake Forest College 64-40 Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium, breaking Grinnell's record for margin of victory over the Foresters. The 24-point margin is one point better than Grinnell's 88-65 victory over Lake Forest in 1990.
Grinnell benefited from a tremendous start, scoring the game's first 14 points.
Grinnell is now 4-2 on the season, its best start in seven years. Lake Forest fell to 0-6 in the league opener for both squads.
Sara Booher '25 had another huge game for Grinnell, posting her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Eva Carchidi '24 and Carolyn Pierce '27 added 12 points each, with Carchidi making 4-of-6 shots from 3-point land and Pierce hitting 4-of-10.
Erin Lillis '24 and Aiyana Rockwell '24 had five and four assists, respectively, while Lillis and Grace Marsh '25 each had two steals.
The Pioneers established season-bests for 3-pointers with 11 and assists with 18.
Lillis began Grinnell's fast start with a pair of free throws. Booher followed with a jumper, Nikki Ware '25 made a trey and Booher scored inside for a 9-0 lead.
Rockwell followed up with a jumper and Pierce nailed a 3-pointer to make it a 14-0 Grinnell lead with 2:56 left in the opening period.
Grinnell led 20-9 after one period and built its halftime margin to 34-14. The Pioneers kept it up in the third period, building their lead to 52-23 by its conclusion.
In all, the Pioneers had nine players find the scoring column and 12 work their way into the game.
The Pioneers hit the road Tuesday to face Knox College. Tip-off in Galesburg, Ill., is at 7:30 p.m.
