Dumont and Doyle Combine for 38 in Narrow Loss to SUNY Canton, 74-72

Potsdam, NY – Four players finished in double figures for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team, but that wasn't enough to overcome the 46-point, 26-rebound effort from Natalie Bartle, as SUNY Canton outlasted the Golden Knights, 74-72, in non-league action Wednesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-2 on the season while SUNY Canton improved to 4-0. Clarkson plays one more game before the Thanksgiving break, hosting Buffalo State next Tuesday.

In the first quarter, it appeared as if Clarkson would run away with the contest, jumping out to a 15-2 lead after a Bella Doyle 3-pointer in the first five minutes. Although the pace slowed, Doyle hit another 3-pointer and Elizabeth Aiossa converted a layup late in the period to put the Knights up by 15, 25-10.

Canton slowly chipped away in the second, pulling to within five after Bartle converted a layup and free throw at the 2:32 mark, putting the tally at 30-25. However, that was all that Canton would get for the rest of the half. Cassidy Dumont hit a 3-pointer at 1:31, and Lexi Huiatt scored on a fast break layup with just over a minute remaining to put the margin at 12 points at the break.

The Knights struggled with just three makes in the third quarter, although all three were from beyond the arc, as Canton edged back into the contest. The Roos picked up their first lead of the contest at 8:08 in the fourth when Hope Aniceto hit a baseline jumper, but the Knights would regain the lead on a 3-pointer from Bella Doyle and then a layup-and-one near the midway point of the period. The two teams then exchanged the several times, with Clarkson picking up what looked like a key basket on a steal in the back court by Raelin Burns, who then quickly made a layup for a 64-63 advantage. Bartle followed with a layup-and-one to put the Roos back on top, but the Knights continued to make shots to keep things close. Bartle made all of her free throws down the stretch, making Addie Kea's mid-court 3-pointer at the buzzer only put the Knights within two.

Dumont scored 19 points and had five assists, while Doyle scored 19 points with eight rebounds before fouling out with four minutes remaining. Addie Kea made four 3-pointers for 12 points while also producing five assists, and Raelin Burns added in 11 points and six boards.

Bartle was a one-player wrecking crew, scoring 46 points on 13-for-24 shooting from the floor and 17-for-17 from the free throw line, also adding in 26 rebounds, including 23 on the defensive end. Hope Aniceto pitched in 11 points and Jayda Pina had nine points and five rebounds.
