Keuka College Wolves Top Hawks for First Win of Season

HILBERT, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team earned their first win of the 2023-24 season by defeating Hilbert College 48-45 on the road on Wednesday night.

Keuka College (1-2) was led by Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) with 16 points and seven rebounds. Katie Deatherage (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Marcus Whitman) and Maddie Kramer (Ringtown, Pa. / Nativity BVM) each added eight points in the win.

The two teams traded points over the first four minutes, but the Wolves went on a run. Keuka College scored 10 unanswered and held Hilbert off the board for nearly five minutes. Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) capped the run with a three to make it 14-5. The run-snapping three by the Hawks was the last basket of the quarter as Keuka led 14-8 after the first.

Both teams started slow in the second quarter. The Wolves scored the first four points and Hilbert answered with a three. That accounted for all of the scoring over the first four minutes of play. An 8-0 run by Hilbert shrunk the Keuka lead down to two, but a Janea Hamilton-Brown (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) jumper ended that. The Wolves later extended their to seven on a Sydney Brown three. Hilbert hit a three of their own with two seconds left, but Keuka remained ahead 27-23 at the half.

After Hilbert cut it back to two to start the half, Sydney Brown knocked down another three to push the Keuka lead back to five. The Hawks responded, shrinking the lead down to one, but Keuka would not relinquish it. After another Brown three, Mary Cotter got the steal. On the fast break, Sophia Babcock (Oswego, N.Y. / Oswego) found Maddie Kramer for the layup and was fouled. Kramer completed the three-point play as the Wolves pushed their lead to nine, 38-29. Hilbert put together another 8-0 run to draw the game to within one. But the Wolves got a free throw to snap the skid and then Maddie Kramer hit a three with 22 seconds remaining to give the Wolves a 42-37 lead going to the fourth.

The final quarter would be an offensive struggle for both teams as they went a combined 3-27 from the floor and 1-11 from three. Sydney Brown scored the first points of the fourth with a three-ball 1:30 into play. It would be over seven minutes until the Wolves got on the board again, but the Hawks only scored four points during that stretch. The Wolves made three free throws at the end to preserve their first win of the season.
