Outside shooting guides top-seeded Presidents past Golden Tornadoes in PAC Tournament Quarterfinals

More news about: Washington and Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson Presidents advanced to the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament after a remarkable night from beyond the arc in a 78-58 victory over Geneva Monday evening in the Salvitti Family Gymnasium. The Presidents drained a season-high 13 three-pointers in the victory.

The Presidents improve to 24-2 on the season with their seventh-straight victory. W&J has now advanced into the PAC Tournament semifinal round in 11 consecutive seasons.

The Red and Black will host the Chatham Cougars in the PAC Tournament Semifinals Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. The last meeting between the two led to a dramatic finish after Bryn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) hit a game-winning buzzer beater to beat the Cougars by a 59-56 score.

Meghan Dryburgh (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) found her way to her 16th double-double of the season as she accumulated 10 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks, four assists, and two steals. Dryburgh also shot 55.6% from the field tonight as she led the Presidents in each phase of the game. Alyssa Pollice (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) posted career highs in points (10) and rebounds (10) to register her first collegiate double double.

Geneva opened the game with the first four points to stake claim to an early lead. The lead however was short lived as the Presidents found their rhythm and led by 23-8 after the first quarter. Adalynn Cherry (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona Area) posted the first nine points of the game for the Presidents as she hit three consecutive threes on neighboring possessions. W&J held a narrow 9-8 lead at the 4:41 mark but seized control by scoring the final 14 points of the first quarter. Pollice gave W&J a big lift off of the bench, as she accounted for seven points in the first quarter, including a pair of triples. Her second triple stretched the lead into double digits at 19-8. Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) tallied a three of her own just before the buzzer to swell the lead to 15.

W&J would carry this rhythm from beyond the arc into the second quarter as Sydney Snyder (Loudonville, Ohio / Loudonville) tacked on a pair of threes for the Presidents. The Presidents methodically added to their lead throughout the frame and stretched it to 44-24 on a triple by Snyder with just under a minute left.

Coming into the second half of play, the Golden Tornadoes made a brief run to try to make their way back into this game with their season on the line but to no avail. The Presidents would quickly match their attempt at a comeback by building a 25-point lead by the end of the third quarter of play at 69-44. Dryburgh accounted for eight points in the third quarter. The Presidents defense remained stout in holding the Golden Tornadoes offense to only 17 points in the third and a multitude of ill-advised shots all around the arc.

In the fourth quarter the Presidents made sure to keep their foot on the gas as they closed out the 20-point win.

Bezjak and Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) led the Presidents in scoring with 15 each followed by Cherry with 11. Loutsion also led the Presidents with three steals.

Three-point shooting had a heavy impact in the decision. W&J proved efficient beyond the arc as they converted 13-of-29 attempts (44.8 percent). The Golden Tornadoes shot a woeful 10.8 percent (4-of-37) from beyond the arc.

W&J out-rebounded Geneva by a 55-45 margin and led 34-19 in bench points.
