No. 12 BW Women's Basketball Falls to John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The No. 12 Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team faced crosstown rival John Carroll University for an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Mike Moran Court inside of the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. The Yellow Jackets were defeated by the Blue Streaks by an 89-86 final score. 

BW (20-3 overall, 13-3 OAC) was led by sophomore forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) as she tallied a career and game-high 27 points and eight rebounds. Vaillant shot 75% (8-12) from the field and added three assists. Sophomore guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) also notched a career-high 22 points while adding two assists. 

JCU (12-11 overall, 7-9 OAC) was led by junior forward Halle Landies as she tallied a team-high 20 points.

1st Half

  • The Blue Streaks kicked out to a 23-16 advantage before the buzzer-beating three by Irwin at the end of the first quarter cut the deficit to four points.
  • John Carroll was unstoppable on the offensive end, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 27-13 in the second quarter to go into the half leading 50-32.
  • BW shot 46.7% from the field as a team in the first half while the Blue Streaks shot 63.2% from the field as a team, 30% higher than their average.

2nd Half

  • Down 16 with 6:01 left in the third, BW sparked a 12-4 run with six points by Vaillant.
  • The Yellow Jackets entered the fourth quarter down 74-61.
  • BW's defense held the Blue Streaks offense at 74 points for the first 3:20 on the fourth quarter, bringing the game within nine points.
  • A layup by senior Academic All-OAC guard Izzy Andrews (Ann Arbor, Mich./Rudolf Steiner) and a big three by Vaillant closed the gap to four points, forcing the home team to a timeout.
  • A three by graduate All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Megan Hensel (Upper Sandusky) and Irwin's final five points wasn't enough as the Blue Streaks went on to claim the 89-86 victory.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 18, as they close the regular season in the second game of an OAC men's and women's doubleheader against Capital University. The game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. in the Performance Center inside of the Capital Center.
